These ethical differences are crucial components in forming their hatred for one another and also rise to the themes of immigration and racial prejudice. The endings of both stories also end very differently. In Romeo and Juliet both lovers die while in The West Side Story Tony dies and Maria actually lives. The ending of the film is much more modern when compared to that of Romeo and Juliet. “Machismo,” meaning male pride, in the spanish society is very prevalent in almost every men. The idea that a woman must be protected and the man must do the heavy work is what we see here throughout much of the film up until the very end. It actually applies a style used in latin music especially prominent in Mexico with mariachi music. Some of the instruments used in “America” which contribute to its latin feel are the percussions called claves, the maracas, and the Spanish guitar. Other instruments included in the structure of the song are trumpets, the flute, oboe, bass, and violins. These instruments together as one create a polyrhythm and interesting tune that is unlike any other piece of music in the film. Particularly the flute and oboe are instruments used to double the solo voices and add emphasis. For example when Anita or any of the females sings a solo line the flute is in the background, but then when one of the men, like Bernardo sing solo the oboe is in the background. The sounds of these two instruments go perfectly with the voices as the women's voices are high like the flute and the men's voices are lower like the oboe. The melody that is created is very catchy as every line ends with “America.” As the puerto ricans sings about their dislikes and likes they will say it passively but when ending the line with “in America” it is said differently than the rest of the lyrics because it is given emphasis with the music and in the way it is said.
