Exploration of Character Development through Precipitation During the novel of Madame Bovary, Gustave Flaubert portrays the maturement of the characters through subtle types of precipitation in the background. Precipitation allows the reader to notice the revelation, or unmasking of a character’s true self. This exposure supports the reader’s better informed opinions of the characters and knowledge of the characters’ state of mind during the context. Also the context of the form of rain indicates a possible inner turmoil within a character and illustrates the need for that character to surpass their flawed selves. Flaubert symbolizes a barrier from through authenticity through narrative use of mist. Emma finds her judgement and decisions covered by mist affecting her decision-making leading to the many irrational thoughts that she has, throughout the novel. This occurs when she meets Leon again at a Parisian church, which Flaubert shrouds “in the mist” as a representation of the façade that he will construct (185). Furthermore, Leon attempts to validate growth and maturity to Emma through a guise, in which he uses Rodolphian tactics to impress Emma. However, he doesn’t realize the mist, or guise, surrounding his environment dissipates, revealing the same insecure young man Emma remembers from Yonville.
