Sofia’s best friend is named Maddi, who happens to come from a different type of family. One day, Sofia was playing with Maddi and Sofia felt hungry. Sofia ran inside before Maddi and opened her refrigerator. However, when Sofia looked inside there was only milk. Maddi told her that she was saving the milk for her little brother but they also had bread. Maddi’s mom cannot pay for food like Sophia’s mom. Maddi made Sofia promise not to tell anyone, so she did not. Sofia went home to a large dinner of fish and a refrigerator full of food. She then decided to bring some fish to school for Maddi the next day. However when they got to school the fish smelled bad. The next day she tried to bring her eggs, but they smelt bad food. More luck was to come when they had burritos for dinner. The next morning Sofia put two burritos, tortillas, beans, milk, and other food in her bag for her and Maddi to share for lunch. The depictions show the dramatic difference in the content of the refrigerators. This distinction is the main point of the book, therefore key for full understanding. In addition, the depictions show the disparities in the children’s dinners. As a secondary point, the artwork of the dinner times reinforces the large difference in quantity, and quality of food for the two families. Finally, the illustrations show a genuine friendship between the two girls. This displays the possibilities of friendships with kids in poverty. The drawings displayed a friendship based off of human connection, playing in the park, and support. The fact that her mom could not buy groceries did not negatively influence the friendship, as seen through out the consistent photos.
