“French Fries” by Jane Martin is a monologue that utilizes vivid imagery, both natural and environmental. The main character, Anna-Mae, talks about her love for a popular fast-food chain (McDonald’s), however, while reading, I found the monologue to be more than just a passion for the nationwide restaurant chain. While it is true that the monologue initially appears to only be talking about McDonald’s, upon analyzing further there’s a clear deeper meaning within the speech. Jane Martin’s writing, as well as the envisioned delivery of the monologue by Anna-Mae’s character, uses vivid imagery and metaphors to capture a deeper meaning than the words themselves convey. When introducing the brand to readers and listeners, Anna Mae uses the word “rainbow” in discussing the famous double-arched logo McDonald’s is known for.
Ehrenreich mentions “The regulation poster in the single unisex rest room admonishes us to wash our hands thoroughly,” in her essay; However, there is almost no one following the instruction because “there is always some vital substance missing—soap, paper towels, toilet paper”. Although workers may want to follow the instructions, it is impossible for them to do so because they “never found all three at once ”. The effect of describing the deficient rest room is to highlight the fact that the owner of the restaurant is so stingy to the workers that the owner refuses to provide enough substance. Thus, the readers can better understand the terrible environment that the workers live in. In short, with mention the dreadful environment of the kitchen and the rest room, the audiences are able to know that lower workers work in a grubby environment and how they have been treated by the upper class.
The one thing that any author must do when writing any sort of essay is to make it comprehensible to the reader. In order to achieve this, the author must utilize anything to get their point across or else the writing would be futile. In Turkeys in the Kitchen , Dave Barry gives his own personal stories about his Thanksgiving and how he feels that men aren’t as useful as women in the terms of the culinary arts (kitchen), Barry’s flippant tone and his use of rhetorical devices such as similes and irony bring forth a light hearted explanation of stereotypes between men and women as well as describing how men are useless in the kitchen. The uses of similes throughout the essay give purpose by showing how men are useless.
A Rhetorical Analysis of “Don’t Blame the Eater” by David Zinczenko Sara, a single mother of two kids, is driving home from a grueling day of work. She’s worked overtime all week and has some tightness in her back. Upon looking at the clock on the dashboard of her 1996 Volkswagen, she realizes that it is way too late to go home and cook a nice dinner for her two children. She turns into the nearest McDonalds, orders some chicken nuggets, and brings dinner home. Can you blame a mother who just wanted her kids to eat?

These foods indicate how far she has come from the traditions of her southern hometown. There are many challenges and obstacles that happen in the lives of many people. In the stories “The Grapes of Wrath” and “The Circuit” they give examples of ways of how people overcome the challenges that they are facing. The people in the story “The Grapes of Wrath” had to find a way to get out of the drought caused by the Dust Bowl. In the story “The Grapes of Wrath” it states “They stood and watched them burning, and then frantically they loaded up the cars and drove away, drove in the dust” and “Maybe we can start again, in the new rich land in California, where fruit grows.” (paragraph 20 and 9, Steinbeck).

In the "Night Waitress by Lynda Hull, the narrator has a lot of concern about her life that she expresses by describing her night at work and the people she encounters while she is there at work. She explores feelings about her appearance, her desires, and her loneliness. The speaker daydreams her way through another monotonous working shift, which reflects on her lower-caste and a disgrace to her employment. Madeleine Thien’s “Simple Recipes” is not mainly about the father cooking food and his treatment towards his son, instead, the author uses food to symbolize the struggles her immigrated family experienced in Canada. While it is possible to only look at the narratives that food symbolizes, the idea is fully expressed when the father is compared with the food. The theme of food and the recipes are able to convey the overall troubles the narrator’s family encountered. Although, food is usually a fulfilling necessity in life, however, Thien uses food to illustrate the struggle, tensions, and downfall of the family. Yet, each food does represent different themes, but the food, fish, is the most intriguing because of the different environment
Every cowboy loves food, even if he is unhappy. The article, “The Cowboys Home On Wheels” by LeeAnn Blankenship and “The U.S.U. Range” by unknown, both share ideas on how food can affect a cowboy’s morale. Blankenship, the author of the article and the unknown poet, highlights how the quality of food affects a cowboy’s morale, like when the article expresses the good impact that food has; in contrast, the poem shows the bad effect food can have on a cowboy’s morale. People need to enjoy their surrounding things, like how cowboys enjoy their food.

Both selections suggest that the quality of food has an effect on cowboys’ morale by implying that good food allows the cowboys to overcome harsh conditions and perform their jobs better.

Written to aid her in mourning of her sister’s death due to starvation in war, Wos takes on a childlike bitterness in her writing. This bitterness stemming from her abundance of food juxtaposed with her sister’s lack of food explains her stubborn refusal to throw the food away. Wos presents a child-like tone through her syntax of telegraphic sentences. Furthermore, she discloses certain personal memories through flashback to compare the importance of food when it abounds to when it does not.
The novel ‘Nada’ written by Carmen Laforet is a twisted heart-breaking tale about a year in the life of the 18-year-old female protagonist Andrea. Throughout this year, Andrea spends in Barcelona with her relatives, she developed various relationships, both homosexual and heterosexual. For the purpose of this essay I will discuss Andrea’s highly affective homosexual relationships with her best friend Ena and her aunt Gloria and how she views and describes both woman differently. I will also briefly contrast her homosexual relationships with that of her heterosexual relationships with Pons and her uncle Román. I will begin with discussing Adrea’s relationship with Gloria, as this relationship began before her relationship with Ena did.
