The use of the fresco technique when painting, usually produces a matte-like finish once it has dried, a trait that can be noted when analyzing Bondone’s painting, The Meeting of Joachim and Anna. On the other hand, Simone Martini’s painting, The Annunciation, shows the opposite finish of Bondone’s painting, because The Annunciation is considered to be very elegant, and includes a gold background, which enhances its brilliance. This is mainly because The Annunciation was painted in tempera and gold leaf on wooden panels, the opposite of a fresco painting. The use of tempera and gold leaf added immense sophistication and brilliance to Martini’s painting, something that Bondone’s painting was lacking. While Bondone’s painting has a matte finish which can be associated with the Florentine style of art, and Martini’s painting has more of an elegant finish,
The book I read was Stones in water by Donna Jo Napoli. In the book, during the holocaust Roberto, his brother, Sergio, and his friends sneak out to see a American film. Yet, unexpectedly Nazis raided the theater and take all the people inside. All the people in the theater end up getting taken to Ukraine in a concentration camp. Basically all the children want to do is get home to Venice Italy at this point.
In addition, Gentileschi painted several artworks for her father and sold some of her own works. (Cohen, 49). Her style compares to Caravaggio’s dramatic, strong lighting (tenebrism), and realistic style. However, Gentileschi’s artistry is not as well-known as Caravaggio’s but rather her rape is more known in popular memory. Moreover, due to being a woman and having a famous rape trial, this overshadowed her very successful artistic career.
In this paper, I will write a brief history of the one of the greatest Italian Renaissance master sculpture of both marble and bronze. Donato di Niccolo’ di Betto Bardi better known as Donatello. I will also give an account of some of the historical events going on during the time of Donatello and evaluate one of his greatest bronze statues called “David” done in the early fifteenth century. Brief History “The Italian sculptor Donatello (1386-1466) was the greatest Florentine sculptor before Michelangelo and certainly the most influential individual artist of the 15th century in Italy. Nearly every later sculptor and numerous Florentine and Paduan painter were indebted to him.”
Nature is a tempting escape from reality, but presents obstacles even for the best-equipped adventurers, like Robyn Davidson. It also challenges a pretentious individual, Chris McCandless (also known as Alexander Supertramp), who has a complete disregard for nature and its true power. The story Tracks tells the journey of Robyn Davidson, who partook in a nine-month journey across the deserts of Western Australia to the Indian Ocean. Unlike Chris McCandless who traveled solo, she was accompanied by her dog Diggity and four camels that she tamed herself to help carry the heavy supplies to aid her expedition. The vast isolation of the desert is exactly what attracted Davidson to it, just like the Alaskan Wilderness called to McCandless.
The physical qualities of Diego Rivera’s “Two Women and a Child” feature an oil on canvas medium. In this painting, Rivera utilizes the fresco technique which according to “A Beginners Guide to the Humanities” is a painting on a surface of plastered wall or ceiling, usually applied when the plaster is wet. Using the fresco technique allows any work of art to have a durable consistency and matte finish. The shapes of the figures have curvilinear lines to accentuate the curves and swirls of their bodies.
The various portraits that Leonardo drew are all in comparison with each portrait’s facial features such as forehead, eyebrows, nose and lips. Analyzing each portrait, one can see that we all were drawn in order from Leonardo’s younger years to older years. A statue that Leonardo had also made resembled him as a young boy and was similar to another painting he had made called “the musician”.
In the image Madonna with the Long Neck and Madonna in the Meadow, the artists do have a lot of similarities and differences within the images, even though they were created around different times. One of the many similarities within the images are that they were created within the same era. The painting by Parmigianino was created between the years 1535-40, while the painting by Raphael was created in 1506, so the resemblance would be that they are both around the same timeline. Another resemblance would be the oil painting technique in the two paintings, that embodies that in both of the paintings they were going through a loving and caring time, but with different settings. Also, the individuals have the same frame and faces in both paintings, all of their faces look as if they are excited about a new life being created and can not wait to see what the baby; which is Jesus, can do in the future.
Towards the end of his career, Giotto’s style kept on improving (Corrain, 1995). In his paintings at Peruzzi Chapel and Santa Croce Chapel, Giotto brought out the true Renaissance style through the use of chiaroscuro and manipulation of perspective. He used color, form and composition in a manipulative way making his style more ornate. This is an aspect that brought the difference between him and his
When we talk about Art History, most people will think about the “High Renaissance” , and the person during that time period people must known is Leonardo da Vinci, and his most famous art work “Mona Lisa”(1503-1505). But in the later time of the art world, the Dutch Baroque, there is another woman portrait became as famous as “Mona Lisa” , it is “Girl with a Pearl Earring”(1665) by Johannes Vermeer. During the High Renaissance, artists recognized people in the world of great strength, which they praised the beauty of human bodies and they chased imitation of ancient Greek art expression. It is considered a “renaissance” at that time: against religious hypocrisy, emphasize on human beings and physical strength. Art under the influence of
The artist’s work in the baroque period often resemble dramatic artworks that sought to draw the viewer into the image, also images employ high contrast of light and shadow as well as a fluidity that were absent in Renaissance art. Baroque creates a strong sense of liveliness, spirit and attraction. And the churches of the baroque churches tend to be richly decorated and the elements in the structure are used more freely than Renaissance. An iconic artist in the renaissance period was Leonardo da Vinci intended to further perfect the aspects of pictorial art (lighting, linear and atmospheric perspective, characterization and foreshortening, anatomy) that had preoccupied artists of the Early Renaissance, His adoption of oil paint as his primary
The Renaissance period of art heavily emphasized realism, putting great effort into depicting human anatomy, human emotion, and human expression in both paintings and sculptures. It also focused on balance and symmetry within the art, and took much inspiration from ancient Rome and Greece, forming its classical ideals. Even so, the subjects of these pieces were frequently biblical in nature, depicting famous saints, Jesus and the Virgin Mary, and other famous scenes from the Bible. There was an increase in naturalism due to advances in perspective and human anatomy, depicting the figures with a life-likeness like no other. The usage of marble allowed the artists to show expressiveness to a degree that wasn’t previously possible, further contributing
Dante Gabriel Rossetti is an artist, who has hugely influenced the world’s history of art, depicting in his painting “Beata Beatrix” the issue topical both to him and the time he was living in. He questions the way the love was chanted by his predecessors and clearly states, “the love is what moves the sun and the light”. This paper will provide the analysis of the most quintessential painting of Rossetti, with the regards to its hidden symbolism and historico-cultural meaning. The multi-talented, temperamental like the Italian and dreamy like the English, Rossetti, being 18-year-old, became the head of "Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood", the members of which were inherently romantic.
In order to get a spatially realistic scene, that is, coherent in depth, Leonardo used lines perpendicular to the plane of the picture that converge towards a vanishing point and horizontal lines, obtained by calculating the scale at which they recede back. He wrote and described perspective as being a phenomenon whereby “all objects transmit their image to the eye by a pyramid of lines”. His approach to design the architectural space in The Last Supper is intriguing, that is, the way he organized the figures in relation to the architecture. The reason behind this, is because he arranged the features of the fresco according to musical harmonies.
In conclusion, The painting, "La Grande Odalisque" by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, and the sculpture, "The Ecstasy of St. Teresa" by Gianlorenzo Bernini, both use women to display a role of power and elegance that was expressed by how the light source was used, was made and the description of women in the two pieces of art. Bernini 's sculpture is very flamboyant and a lot of expression comes out of it. Remember the light source was aiming directly at the angel and St. Teresa that brought the audiences eyes to the sculpture. Also, the way the sculpture was made, and how the women were used in this piece of art brought out a sense of emotionalism to it. Now in Ingres 's painting, it expressed more simplicity because it displays a woman that is nude, but in an elegant way.
