Magical realism is a genre that is often confused with a magical worlds like Harry Potter, except it's not. Magical realism is when an author or director "incorporates fantastic or mythical elements into otherwise realistic fiction”(Webster Dictionary). Many latino authors especially use magical realism to create their stories. How is magical realism created one might ask? To create magical realism there are many elements that must be used to create the magical realism genre. Metamorphosis is one major element that makes a story magical realism due to the transformation is treated as normal in the world. Edward Bloom, a character of the movie Big Fish, works at a circus. In the book by Rudolfo Anaya, the author uses this element to create magical realism. In Bless Me, Ultima,Tellez and his family has not been eating or sleeping because of a curse that was placed on the house by Tenorio, the father of the towns witches. Tellez states,“‘ the pots and pans, the dishes lift into the air and crash against the walls[of his home]!’”(Anaya pg. 224) The pots, pans and dishes of the house take a life of their own. These ordinary objects normally can not fly themselves off the shelves, but in magical realism ordinary objects can take on a life of their own. Anaya isn't the only story teller who used this element. movie director tim burton also used the element of objects coming alive to create a magically realistic movie. In the movie Big Fish, burton creates trees that attack the main character, edward bloom ,as he walks through a forest. In the world of the reader a tree cannot “attack” someone as they are walking. In the reader’s world trees cannot move, unlike the trees in Big Fish that attack Edward. These characteristics of ordinary objects having life like characteristics creates magical
