In the novel Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen, the main character Cole Matthews goes from a furious teenager that controls his anger through violence to a controlled young adult who turns to be very thoughtful. The text states “With anger he had been brewing all day, he attacked him and started hitting him hard in the face with his bare fists” (Mikaelsen 7). This quote shows Cole let out his anger violently or in ways of hurting others. The text also states “But maybe if Peter came to the island,he would see how much things could change”(Mikaelsen 203). Rick Riordan is an amazing author, having written over seventy books, he was inspired by his son, asking him constantly about various forms of mythology. Three of his books are about Norse mythology, centering about Magnus Chase, a son of Frey. In both books he has to attempt to save the world by binding the wolf of the apocalypse and stopping a wedding that would most likely end the world. He is an undead soldier in Odin’s army. The two books are similar.
When thinking of the wilderness one might picture a scene from a camp site. Untamed dense forest, and endless jungle probably come first to mind and although this might be one meaning of wilderness, Mellor’s perception of wilderness and pastoral opens our thoughts on how we view the unpredictable and the known. In “Lure Of The Wilderness” by Leo Mellor, he shows the meaning of the unexplored wilderness and the surprises that come with the unknown, while humans try to tame what is wild and create a pastoral environment around them. Mellor’s writing helps understand hidden aspects in the short story “Wild” by Lesley Arimah, when Ada is blindsided with a plane ticket to visit her aunt in Africa. She travels to a place mostly unknown to her, besides the relatives living there.

While reading Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard by Rick Riordan, I constantly felt as if I was being dropped into the story, fighting right next to the characters. The author does an amazing job of depicting the setting with rich vocabulary and extensive detail. In this book, Magnus Chase and his companions travel through many worlds, all of which follow the theme of Norse mythology. In the legends, humans live in a world called Midgard. This book is mainly set in Boston, Massachusetts which is believed to be the center of the nine worlds.

The themes that will shape a better understanding will be; power, honor and revenge, and manipulation.
