There are similarities and multiple differences between the way the authors of I Am Malala and The Hobbit portray the hero’s journey, and most are differences. First of all, the biggest difference in the hero’s journey for the novels was the assistance. In I Am Malala, Malala’s father stays by her side during her journey in sharing her beliefs, but Gandalf leaves Bilbo early in the journey. Furthermore, the assistance in the hero’s journey is very important, because it contributes to many things that happen later on in the story. If Malala’s father had left in her journey, she probably wouldn’t have been shot, nor would she have gotten a Nobel Peace Prize, because she would have never met the reporters who helped her spread her beliefs; If Gandalf had stayed with Bilbo and the dwarves like Malala’s father had stayed with her, they never would have been caught by the wood elves and they would have never had to defeat the giant spiders,
Army Ranger School, Special Forces, Airborne School, Air Assault School, and many more are considered to be challenging and rewarding. They separate you from your peers, give you advanced training and experiences that nobody else will get, and can elevate your military career to the next level. There is no doubt that female soldiers should have the right to go to these schools, and if they meet the criteria to pass then award them with the appropriate rewards. The issue currently with these schools is that female soldiers are treated differently and held to different standards than the male soldiers are. In the feature article “All Guts, No Glory”, I agree with the author Molly M. Ginty, that women participating in combat. If I was in the military some of the things that might affect me would be probably because of my gender. First, women would not be put into battle because people think women cannot handle the work or bloodshed. They think women are better off bring a nurse for helping men in battle if they get injured. Second, they think women in combat would be a distraction.
Over the last few decades, various films and television shows have started to introduce strong female protagonists with a story arc that does not revolve around its male counterparts. To truly test the extent of involvement of female characters in a film, the Bechdel-Wallace Test or as many know it as the Bechdel Test was created. The Bechdel Test was named after Alison Bechdel, the creator of the comic strip “Dykes to Watch Out For” in a segment called “The Rule”. For a film to pass the test, it must meet the following criteria: 1) “Have at least two named women 2) The women speak to each other 3) Their conversations are about anything but, the man” If the answer is yes to all the criteria, the film passes the Bechdel Test.
Maxine Hong Kingston's use of talk stories in The Woman Warrior emphasizes that individuals will find a more fulfilling life if they defy the traditional gender norms place on them by society. While contemplating beauty standards in Chinese society in “No Name Woman” Maxine Kingston thinks, “Sister used to sit on their beds and cry together… as their mothers or their slaves removed the bandages for a few minutes each night and let the blood gush back into their veins” (9). From a young age girls are expected to be binding their feet and are told that it is to look beautiful, but in reality that is not why. When a womans feet are bound they are restrained and silenced. These girls could be free and happy but they are restrained by men through this binding.
Women continue to disprove the stereotype that they are too “frail and delicate” to serve in the armed forces. Equality means equal rights and equal responsibilities, and if a woman can meet the same requirements mandatory for men to join the armed forces, she should be eligible for the draft. Even if the majority of citizens able to meet the requirements is still men, this would be fair as it gives all women the opportunity to attempt, and those who do meet the requirements will be able to serve their country in a time of
Americans are constantly “just talking” and value the individual and expressing one’s self. In contrast, The Chinese culture values secrets and introvertism. In Maxine Hong Kingston’s Woman Warrior, Maxine must find her way through America while pleasing her Chinese family. She struggles to categorize herself into either society and finding a sense of identity. Kingston uses Maxine’s struggle to illustrate that when one is stuck between two cultures, one tends to have a harder time finding a sense of identity.
In the book written by (Gavin, 1997) it was cited that “As women took over from their absent men in hundreds of new and challenging occupations, many of which had previously been considered inappropriate”. From the beginning of the World War 1, the German women were participating a great deal. They contributed to half a million-people working on the munitions manufacturing alone (Gavin, 1997). It also mentioned in the book that over in the U.S, the men in charge refused to let the women participate up until April 1917 (Gavin, 1997). The U.S government never formally authorize the enrolment of women, despite Army officials repeatedly asking for such personnel’s.
Since the year 2013, many from Congress, the Senate and the Pentagon have been trying to allow female soldiers in the combat role into our military forces. Even the SOCOM, Special Operations Command, has been considering allowing females into the special forces, saying they could benefit . For basic military entry, the physical standards for females are lower than the male basic military entry scores. If the Special Operation forces, like Navy SEALs, Green Berets, Air Force PJs and MARSOC, allow females in, then they can not lower the physical and body composition standards when volunteering for the Special Forces. Neel Khanna Mrs. Meahl IB English III August 11, 2014 Beginnings in The Woman Warrior The Woman Warrior is a collection of memoirs in which Maxine Hong Kingston writes about the people and events which help shape her thinking and her girlhood growing up as a Chinese-American. Kingston discusses these most salient events and idols in five separate chapters, including the first chapter in which Kingston reveals the fate of her father’s sister to place the reader in the midst of things, effectively grabbing the reader’s attention. The chapter progresses forward with the introduction of the themes of fear, bravery and the Chinese culture, all of which resound throughout the book.
Many have argued should women be allowed to serve in direct combat for decades. Activists have argued that women should be allowed to serve in combative roles, but many governmental and political officials as well as American citizens feel differently. Arguments of women who have been serving in the military since the Revolutionary War, many disguised as men has exposed them to combat, death and even becoming POW’s. Many women have been serving beside their fellow comrades for years and are capable of doing so without causing disruption of the unit cohesion or combat readiness. The controversial issues will be discussed, but before that let’s provide some historical insight on how women’s roles in the military have evolved.
Due to their inability to pass the physical readiness test, women fighting in combat is more dangerous compared to men fighting in combat. Women fighting in combat is controversial because many people believe women are not fit for combat. I maintain women should not fight in combat because the safest way for females in particular to serve their country is by working in other fields in the military. Women have proven themselves as being competent and qualified for tasks and jobs in the military even under stressful or dangerous conditions. Men are allowed to choose combat and women should also be given this choice. Society will not suffer because not all women desire to fight in war-like conditions or deployments. Recently, there are numerous women who serve as Generals and Admirals. They consist of all components of the forces including serving in combat units and onboard ships.
The chapter “White Tigers” from the book The Warrior Woman, by Maxine Hong Kingston, has long been seen as a story from a very cultured point of view. Indeed, it’s easy to say that people who are not Chinese don't really have a connection with this story because these experiences only happen in their culture. 2.
