One major change in race relations was from the 13th amendment. This amendment was a huge change for African Americans and whites because it abolished slavery and gave the Congress power to enforce the law. This was a huge change because now slaves were being freed and given the same rights as whites, they were becoming equals. The main reason Congress and Lincoln passed this as an amendment was because it was a major aspect that lead to the war in 1865. In 1864 Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B Anthony, and Women’s Loyal National League gathered together and collected signatures from thousands of people who supported anti-slavery and wanted a new beginning.

Industrialization caused many people to move for better opportunity and because of this the population was doubled. There was also not enough housing space for all the people who had moved. With high rent and low incomes multiple families had to move into one single household together. Because of the increase in population there was also an issue with street cleanliness and trash. Factories dropped 20 pounds of trash and a gallon of urine due to the horses on the streets daily. Living conditions were horrible and sickness swept through the cities. Hawaiian Annexation: The United States first became involved in the 1840’s when US missionaries and planters settled in Hawaii and over time took more control over the islands. The Queen of Hawaii wanted to diminish the control United states had, but eventually the Americans overthrew her, and she was imprisoned.
