Schools put pressure on students to meet the standards with the consequence that it will later on affect their college and their career. Thus comes along standardized testing, (SAT or ACT) in which these exams force
Some opponents may say that some graduated students cannot pass even high school exam and that is why we need to make a harder standard of the education system. However, high school students take tests what they study in last week or month, but the adults cannot pass the test because they finished school a long time ago and may have already forgotten a lot. According to the article “L.A. Unified retreats on higher graduation standards” by Howard Blume, “The Los Angeles Board of Education on Tuesday retreated from new, more rigorous graduation standards out of concern that huge numbers of students would fail to earn diplomas.” I totally agree with the author that is good idea retreated from highest standards so that more students can get diplomas.
The general argument made by Mac Tucker is that the qualification system used in America isn’t up to par with the system used in other countries. More specifically Tucker argues that a better system could be put into place because the one now doesn't work well and Americans actually hate the system currently in use. He writes that many of the high stakes exams taken are set for the students not the teachers. The teachers receive no repercussions because these exams are set for the students and the only ones on the line are them. In this passage Tucker is suggesting that a new system should be put into place so that students and teachers are both able to track their progress and improve their standards.
Gutting and Edmundson both blame the structure of the education system, but at the same time it sounds like the change needs to come only from students. In their book I wouldn’t always be their “ideal” student that is depending on the classes they would teach me. Like Gutting said colleges sometimes give unnecessary courses, so it can be hard to be interested in something that in no way relates to your major. In a country that promotes the ideas of grit, innovation, resourcefulness, and growth, I find it curious that American universities are still using standardized tests as an indicator of future success in college. Although standardized tests are only one factor in admissions to many colleges, they should not be used at all because they do not accurately predict the success of students in higher educational environments. Instead of using the SAT and ACT, admissions officers should put more weight on written essays, cumulative high school grade point average, extracurriculars, and letters of recommendation when deciding admissions. Although some may argue that the SAT and ACT offer a way of ranking students without factoring in grade point average, their ability to predict the future success of college students has not been demonstrated.
William Butler Yeats once said, “Education is not the filling of a bucket but the lighting of a fire”. Yeats, a famous poet of the 20th century, understood that the benefits of an education do not just end after it is through, like when a bucket gets filled to the brim. Instead, they spread into all aspects of one’s life like a wildfire, and can change the course of one’s life forever—especially if one pursues higher education. A college education is extremely valuable to ensure a successful future.
This can ultimately equate to priority on-campus housing, tuition reductions, dream colleges, and jobs; aspects of college that are not always guaranteed without exceptional test scores. AP (Advanced Placement) exams can ensure college credit for a certain subject if the student performs well, preferably scoring a four or five out of five. “For example, if you score well on the AP English Literature exam, you may not have to take the college’s required freshman-level English course.” (Taking Required Tests) If every college did not consider standardized tests, then universities and employers would miss out on academically inclined prospects.
Introduction Standardized tests may be used for a wide variety of educational purposes. For example, they may be used to determine a young child’s readiness for kindergarten, identify students who need special-education services or specialized academic support, place students in different academic programs or course levels, or award diplomas and other educational certificates. Thesis Statement Standardized tests should not be eliminated completely, but should rather be evaluated in addition to other factors such as grades, extracurricular activities, and volunteer hours. This would take pressure off of students during standardized tests, allow colleges to see how well-rounded the students are, and give students who are better in other areas
Lone Star High School is a location where students can feel secure and have many opportunities to showcase their skills and leadership qualities. Our campus is built upon five figurative pillars; Integrity, Strength, Stewardship, Loyalty and Perseverance. These pillars are what make us the admirable school that we are today. I believe everyone of our students must have these five qualities in order to ensure success now and later on in the future. As a student I believe that for one to have integrity they must show signs of righteous ethical morals.
Self-Identity In Maya Angelou’s narrative, “Graduation Day,” she conveys the oppressive reality of life in the South by sharing an experience in which words influenced her character. Angelou recounts the words of her community on the day of her graduation as uplifting and hopeful for the graduates’ futures. When Mr. Donleavy, a white speaker, arrives he delivers a speech to the graduates informing them about the forthcoming educational improvements to their school and the Central High School, an all-white school. The suggestive differences expose the graduates to their limitations for success.
A 2001 study conducted by the Brookings Institution found that 50%-80% of year-over-year test score improvements were simply "fluctuations that had nothing to do with long-term changes in learning". Standardized testing doesn't tell really help colleges who is better prepared and who isn't. Because of this, students that might actually be better equipped for college might slip through the cracks, not even considered because the standardized test proved an unfair barrier. Next, standardized testing doesn't test some things that are important to be a good student. I feel that the test cannot measure our creativity, our intuitive ability, nor our critical thinking, among many qualities that can define a truly worthy student.
Struggles of Standardized Testing Students have learned since the beginning of grade school that grades matter. Once a student reaches middle school it turns into preparation for high school. Then finally once the student reaches high school it is preparation time for the universal standard test, for most, taken your junior year. Standardized testing should be removed from college standards because it only evaluates one day of testing instead of a student’s entire schooling career, teachers prepare students for the test and not teach to learn, and the testing does not define if a student will succeed in college.
America has come a long way in its education system. It is easier now, more than ever, for people of any race or gender to get an education. However, it is arguable that the educational system does not do its job to prepare students to become successful young adults. There are many flaws in the order of education, which causes students to worry more about satisfying others with test scores and academics rather than actually preparing them for the real world. While the educational system does prepare students for the academic stress of college, it does not qualify students to become young, successful adults and survive in the real world.
Graduating High School A day I will never forget was the day that I graduated high school. All the emotions were overwhelming and hard to handle sometimes. It was hard to accept that one of the biggest chapters in my life was about to be over and I was about to start an even bigger one.
