Making Light of Tragedy
In Making Light of Tragedy by Jessica Grant is a collection that portrays both arrogance and uncertainty. They exemplify to a great extent what it is like to feel lost in a world that seems so simple. Grant creates vivid imagery ensuring that the reader can paint the picture beautifully in their head and understand the moral of the story.
The two short stories “The Anxiety Exhibit” and “Bellicrostic” capture the motif of feeling lost, trapped and unhappy exceptionally well. “The Anxiety Exhibit” is about a young woman that runs into several young men that mistreat and abuse her. “The Plane Princess” is about a woman that is just so sick of being just a passenger on a plane, she wants to be more than that. One day as she is walking off of a plane and into the connected tunnel and finds a flight attendants badge lying on the floor. With no hesitation she snags the brooch and decides to keep it, but with a plan up her sleeve. Fast forwarding to her next plane ride she decides to be a flight attendant for the day. This was where the characters true colours are shown. The honour of being a part of the job as a flight attendant makes her character's mood flip thoroughly. She no longer cared about waiting for the passengers to exit the plane, now it was her duty to make sure they all departed safety. This indicates how the setting has a tremendous impact on how the character is portrayed. She goes from being bitter and annoyed to enthusiastic and joyful. However, in the story “Aloha”, the setting unquestionably affects the characters emotions, but in a different way. “Aloha” is about a couple that is getting ready for their vacation. When the couple is on their way to the airport the cab driver is joking around with them and pumping them up for their vacation. Once they arrive, and the couple is getting out of the cab he states “ have a nice trip now, you two. I'll take real
