Thesis: In “The Autobiography of Malcolm X”, Malcolm X in his telling of his life to Alex Haley uncovers the theme of positive and negative environments unearthed by the interaction of African Americans and White Americans in his life and what those kinds of environments inherently produce. Annotated Bibliography Nelson, Emmanuel S. Ethnic American Literature: an Encyclopedia for Students. Greenwood, An Imprint of ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2015.This encyclopedia points out that the negative interaction he held with the white man as a young hustler was countered by these same experiences pushing Malcolm X to reclaim his “African identity”. This shows, as described by the cited work, what a man pushed by his negative interactions with the oppressive white men is willing to do to find his identity (i.e. through hustling).
Throughout Malcolm Xś career he faced much hatred and even found himself being attacked many times but he did not let this slow him down. Malcolm X knew that he was in danger for just simply being in the fight that he was for, for freedom and justice for black people. MALCOLM X Before there was the political leader known as Malcolm X, there was Malcolm Little, a small time crook with no direction. That was until January of 1946 when he was arrested for burglary and later charged with larceny and breaking and entering, which carried a hefty sentence. It was during his incarceration that Little was introduced to the Nation of Islam and he slowly began changing his ways and eventually his name to Malcolm X. In the years following his release, X rose up the ranks of the NOI and became a prominent minister and civil rights activist.
After Malcolm goes through all the trouble of selling the drugs and making the money for AJ in the three weeks that were given, he comes to this realization of what he is capable of becoming. The self-actualization need is satisfied because of how much he has grown as a person and open to growing more. At the end when he’s writing in his Harvard application, he demonstrates that he is a problem solver, self-empowered, and has a better understanding of the world. At the end of the movie, Malcolm goes to the interview with AJ. Known as one of the most powerful and controversial figures of the civil rights movement, Malcolm X is best known for being a Muslim minister, human rights activist, and a fierce advocate for Black Nationalism. He was a human rights activist who fought for everyone to have equal rights. He knew that black people should be treated the same way that white people were so he set out on a mission to make sure that would happen. He argued for power to black people, for black economic autonomy, and for racial pride. His passion was for people of colour to have equal rights.
Due to Malcolm X’s struggles in his early life, he dealt with an internal anger and resentment towards the white race, which lead to him rebelling and acting out. When Malcolm X was only 6 years old, criminals murdered his father and sparked an internal flame of hatred. His anger convinced him to commit various crimes such as stealing. This acted as a way to rebel against his family and the white community; he would not accept going unnoticed, nor would he accept others as they treated him as inferior. Not only did young Malcolm steal, but he also fought frequently with his family members.
Malcolm’s speeches acted more as instruments of provocation than conversion. Unlike Martin Luther King Jr.’s campaign, Malcolm’s campaign around the country was a direct assault and it was difficult to see any oppressor that will tolerate such. This obviously accounted for the many police brutalities, imprisonment and deaths among the black race. Malcolm X symbolized black dominance and self-respect, he was one of the greatest forces that shaped the current understanding and interpretation given to conflict and violence in the world politics today. If Malcolm were to live in this era, he would be labeled as a terrorist (http://malcolmx.com/).
Now, I do not read nearly as much as I used to. I have become very picky, and it takes much more for me to become engrossed in a book. I am more inclined to reading works of fiction with intricate, intriguing plots and complicated characters that make me think, or stories that explore new ideas that I can run away with. Malcolm X was not so particular. He was ever curious and was always striving to satisfy his curiosity through reading.
We all know how great of a leader Martin Luther King uprose to be however, right behind him was also a superior leader named Malcolm X. I admired how the video highlighted the fact that yes Malcolm did get hooked on drugs nonetheless, we all have different ways to handle grief and at the moment he introduced himself to drugs he was dealing with family issues. Malcolm X was genuinely a master teacher as the clip mentioned and the videos of the town saying their goodbyes to a person they may have never met let alone seen in person touched my heart to get to see the real effect that this man had on people. Malcolm was truly an inspirational leader who died at thirty nine years old by sixteen shots close range, none of what he deserved. Furthermore
What were Malcolm X’s beliefs? What did he hope to see change, and how for that matter did he believe he could make those changes happen? While analyzing Malcolm X and Black Rage, written by Cornel West, questions such as those are brought to light. Malcolm X’s motives are further explored as author Cornel West goes into depth and critiques Malcolm X’s tactics, such as black rage and psychic conversion, why they were such an important part of his philosophy, and if he believed said tactics were effective.
