Comparative Essay Throughout both these dystopian stories, ideas of oppression and manipulation are shown. Leaders appear to have complete control and power which is often misused. As both The Matrix and Animal Farm progress, this power and control is altered and changed. The Matrix is a film about an artificial reality created for humans to live in. The plot revolves around a character called Neo who is an expert computer hacker. He is tasked with the responsibility of freeing humanity from the machines in power. Animal Farm is a novella about an uprising in which farmyard animals overthrow the humans in charge and take control. The Wachowskis write the machines as mighty beings that believe the human race is just a plague on the planet. This is shown during the film by their tendency to do things alone and use humans for their dirty work, “Lieutenant, you were given specific orders”.The filmmovie's plot is driven by the struggle for power between the machines and humans who are aware of the simulation. The machines use their power and control to manipulate humanity into a state of ignorance and servitude. They do this by keeping humans trapped in a virtual existence. The Wachowskis write the plot like this to make the viewers consider ways people in power may be manipulating them currently. The makeup of “The Matrix” is a code which means advanced programmers can change it thus making changes in the simulation on Earth.
