Mapping Aboriginal Perspectives Essay

The following table is an example of mapping the Aboriginal perspectives in the primary context across different learning areas and topics. At the end of each lesson, it is crucial to evaluate and to reflect on the students’ learning outcomes and whether it meets the student’s needs or not. The aim of the collaborative planned lessons is to increase the Aboriginal sense of belonging where the variety of resources honours and values the historical and contemporary Indigenous communities.

Discuss with the students how the Aboriginal people cultural practices conserved the natural environment.

Activity: The students plant a tree corridor and a bush tucker garden. Then, they will have the opportunity to learn about measurement (length, area, volume and capacity, mass, time), and Space and Geometry (position).

Creative Arts, Technology, Numeracy and Literacy Aboriginal Arts Resources: art materials: paints, brushes and paper

1. Students observe prints of hand stencils made by Aboriginal artists. They identify and discuss the different shapes/lines/patterns, comparing these works to their own.

2. Then, ask them to make their own pattern using the Aboriginal art.

3. View CDs like, Moorditj cd-rom which introduce different information and readings about the Indigenous artists to know the story behind each piece of art.

HSIE (History, geography), Science, Technology and Arts Our Australia (My place) This topic provides opportunities for students to explore concepts of belonging to groups of people and of belonging to places.

1. Introduce the unique Australia geographical location, plants and animals.

2. Discuss the history of the first Australians (Aboriginal people) and how their lifestyles were adapted to their environments and provided for all their social, cultural and material
