Passion, fortitude, and unwavering commitment define my character, making me an ideal candidate for membership in the HHS MBLT. Marching band is not for the faint of heart. It requires a great deal of time, commitment, practice, teamwork, and perseverance. In order to motivate participants, marching bands require excellent leaders. We are so fortunate to have the best instructors at Hickman High School! I learn a great deal from emulating these teachers and hope to serve in a student leadership role to further enhance the marching band program. To be an effective leader, one must be humble yet confident. I believe I espouse this sentiment. I strive to excel in all I do while being an active learner. We all grow and learn everyday and leaders are no exception to this. I have held several leadership roles over the past few years, in which I have learned a great deal. I currently serve in Hickman's student government and I am the founder/president of the Philosophy Club. It is very easy to get taken away from the competition, and only focus on that. Philosophers like Karl Marx argue that competition perpetuates social inequality, and it makes people feel bad. My beliefs fall more in line with the views of philosophers Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill. They had very positive views on the competition. Competition is essential to improvement and productivity. It provides an incentive to work harder, if not harder than your peers. For example, let’s take a look at companies such as Apple and Samsung. Their constant competition has led them to constantly make improvements to their products. This applies to marching bands, too. When you are in the face of never-ending competition, our players improve drastically. Competition is good from a healthy viewpoint, where you don’t let competition rule your
