To accept the role of drum major is to accept the role of a leader, role model, and instigator. What is meant by instigator is that by being drum major, nothing should be the same. Standing around and waiting for instruction is not a characteristic a drum major should have. A drum major should always be doing something and listening to information communicated by a director, adult, or other fellow students. Being drum major does not mean that others are lesser members of the band, but what it does mean is that the code of conduct and guidelines set are at higher expectations than the others because it is a role with high responsibilities.
We’re true band geeks who love what we do We love our instruments, and band, too. For fall is marching band season, a time for woodwinds and brass to reign, For drummers to master the elusive beat, for the conductor to stand on the bandstand again The band and I — we live for our show, each other and for the show.
When I ended my sophomore year, I felt as if I was on top of the world. My grades were top tier, I had a successful soccer season, and I had just been assigned the drum major position in my school’s marching band. However about halfway through the following summer, I was diagnosed with depression. Instead of trying to fight through my condition, I allowed myself to slink deeper and deeper into an abyss. I knew that in my tenure as drum major, I would need to have a stable mind in order to be effective and have a possible impact on the band
Any good program needs a strong leadership team, and I have always wanted to be a strong leader because I love helping others be their very best. In our marching band program our section leaders are called FOG (For Others Greatness), they are chosen not only for their musicality but also for their ability to work with and guide others. The section leaders during my freshman year were incredible and I longed to be just like them when I was finally able to apply and audition for the position. I am on the color guard and do not play an instrument during the marching season, therefore my color guard skills would need to be at an elevated level in comparison to those of my peers. As the audition portion of the application came about I worked diligently

He doesn’t try to assert his authority over those in the section he is working with, opting to work with them and be on their level. Whether he gets the position of Drum Major or section leader, I believe that Ryan will be able to work as an effective leader and set an example for those who need a role model. Another person that went to the meeting that I feel has the ability to be an effective leader in our marching band is Brooke. I know what you’re thinking. I don’t have the best credibility when it comes to Brooke because of our relationship, but I am trying to unbiasedly judge her leadership abilities.
When I was little I always tried to keep to myself; I never really wanted to be more than be an average student. I would go to school and would go home every day and never tried to do more. I never was a leader at that age; I was known to be kind and caring but I rarely took charged of a situation and always stayed in the background. It wasn’t until around 8th grade that things started to change, I began to realize that
Presently, High School has been changing point before going to college and beginning my dream. Before my breaking point I need one more step. I required the doubt to decide if I would be joining an extra curriculum activity, demanding decision for a freshman to make before even meeting my teachers. A month before I started school, my brother convinced me to join the Hawthorne High School Band and Color Guard. I meet the band director Mr. Hughes, who has always believed I had a talent and did his best to polish my color guard skills year by year to be the outstanding person he sees.
It was extremely difficult to plan and lead these rehearsals because I had no experience doing it. My band director always made it look easy and I learned very quickly that it was not as easy as it seemed. Planning a rehearsal required a lot of forethought because I had to know what areas of the music or drill that the band needed the most practice with. Being drum major taught me an appreciation that I did not have as a child for the job that my band director performs on a daily basis.
Being in high school, I have always thought that a student should be involved in some sort of activity, whether it be sports, choir, or the gaming club, it’s nice to branch out just a little bit. Well, I did quite a bit of that including golf, band, and theatre. I was on the Girl’s Golf team for two years, and managed the Boy’s team for one. I love to play, and being in a small team was a lot of fun. Their wasn’t girls fighting over who would play varsity or not, but instead pushing each other get their lowest scores.
I was only a few days in when I stepped back and noticed something, all the leaders were missing out on other opportunities. They were consumed with responsibilities and so narrow minded towards band that most of them were missing the fun times outside of their narrow vision. When they were given new opportunities outside of band they mostly ignored them because they only had one thing on their mind. It made me realize that all the duties I’ve done for band had given me more opportunities to be a new different leader around the school. By not being a leader in the band I was allowed to see them.
I attended to a concert performed by the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra on November 13th this year. This concert took place in the Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. I chose to attend to this concert because I have never been to a performance by any youth orchestra, I was curious to see how their performance would compare to other orchestras. The first of the three piece that were performed in this concert was Maenads’ Dance, from The Bassarids, composed by Hans Werner Henze. A variety of instruments were used in this piece, including woodwinds, brass, percussion, and strings.
Last year I became captain on the Soccer Varsity team of my high school. Being captain isn’t just being the head of all the girls, but is doing the best for the team. My goal was to work as a team in and outside the field, and working together to win and have fun. But my conflicts with certain girls were getting in the way, because how can I expect them to do a certain thing if I’m not setting an example. I chose to talk to those girls, set things straight and set an example to my teammates.
Sunday Night Synthesis - Week 3 - Buckmiller Two common themes expressed by all the material presented this week are, that we need to develop a relationship with our students in order to motivate them, and second, we as educators have to show true enthusiasm for what we are teaching. In chapter two of Meet in the Middle, Dr. Wormeli gives seventeen suggestions of ways to keep students motivated. Though all these are relevant, there were two that I related to the most. First is Meeting Learning Needs. In this section Dr. Wormeli talks about how he used the Dunn and Dunn Learning Style Inventory to determine the individual needs of his students.
Human Wasteland Humans have been identified as a main cause of climate change on earth. The damage humans contribute to the global warming process is irreversible. NASA.gov testifies that, “Most climate scientists agree that the main cause of the current global warming trend is human expansion of the greenhouse effect.” Climate change is ultimately resulted from humans burning raw materials such as coal, gas and oil. These materials create poisonous toxins that create a blanket like shield around the earth causing sea levels to rise, glaciers to melt, and smog like conditions.
