The novel ‘Marcelo in the Real World’ is a young adult novel written by Francisco X Stork. The novel is narrated in a strong personal voice of a 17 years old boy. Through the point of view of Marcelo Sandoval, a boy with Asperger Syndrome the writer conveys a theme of coming of Age. We as readers journey with him as he changes and matures into a young man. The writer uses various techniques and events to illustrate the theme. His personal feeling and thoughts are shown through events such as standing up to Wendell, Arturo’s plan for summer and Marcelo failing in the real world. Though these conflicts he learns about the real world and how to survive in the society. The event, Marcelo standing up to Wendell, shows Marcelo becoming mature. The writer intended to show a contrast of Marcelo’s action as childhood and adulthood. By showing a clear comparison of his action from the start and the end of the novel. At the start of the novel Marcelo couldn’t express his feeling or opinion to anyone, especially to Wendell. He evades conversation about Jasmine with Wendell. However throughout his journey Marcelo learned to express his emotions, he became mature and independent through facing struggles.
