Marco Polo an explorer from Venice who when in Asia discovered a route that would advance trading throughout the world. Marco Polo, was born in the year 1254 AD in Venice, Italy. As a iconic figure, Marco Polo’s exact date of birth is unconfirmed amongst contemporary historians. The date is hypothesised to be in the month of September. Marco Polo was born into a family of wealthy Venetian merchants (Biography.com, 2016).In the year 1260 AD, Marco Polo’s mother Nicole passed away, whilst his father and uncle where trading in Constantinople (Thefamouspeople.com, 2016). The main purpose of the Silk Road was to trade between many countries in central Asia from East to West. The Silk Road was not only for trade but for a safe passage for refugees. The Silk Road also brought together a lot of different cultures and religious beliefs of different countries. This road was called the Silk Road in 1877 AD by Fredinand Von Richthofen, as the major trading on this road was silk (Reference, 2016).The Silk Road was used by all kinds of people from all kinds of different countries. One of the main countries to use the Silk Road was China. They used it for trading of horses, seeds of lucerne and grapes. Central Asia also used the Silk Road to transport various woollen goods, carpet, curtains, blankets and rugs to central Asia and Mediterranean. Central Asia also exported camels, military equipment, gold, silver stones, glass items watermelons, melons, peaches, sheep and hunting dogs. Another country that used the Silk Road was Eastern Europe, to trade cotton. They imported rice, woollen and silk fabrics. There were also a lot of refugees that used the Silk Road to make their way to safer destinations after escaping the war in their country. Not all that was traded along the Silk Road was good. The Black Death spread to Europe by the Silk Road (Advantour.com, 2016). The Silk Road was very important as it helped advance trade between a number of different countries with ideas and culture, inventions and unique products to spread across much of the settled world.
