(The date is October 31st, 2020, Halloween night. A rather strange and mysterious night, with a luminance full moon above. Adults, teenagers, and children roam the city of La Crosse is gathering all the candy they can, when the lights start to flicker and the winds starts to swirl. Everyone turns to their phone to see what the matter is, but no technology is working. When all at once the lights go out and a bolt of lightning strikes the Hoeschler clock tower. Then out from under the tower walks, two dead authors, two living authors, and a few other confused people. For some reason you have all come together, whether it is to warn us about what is to come as our society progresses further and further or it is to make suggestions on how to keep our society moving forward. Whatever the reason, Margret Atwood, what do you have to say about being here? Atwood: Well, first off, what is with these young adults running around in the most absurd costumes? Have they no respect for authority or any self-discipline. Those girls, aren’t they freezing in those skimpy dresses, “women adorn themselves in modest apparel with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array” (221). They are drawing attention and asking for a negative response. Didn’t anyone teach them better? Anderson: Yes, I agree. Halloween has lost its meaning of honoring the dead. The people that have the most meaning and purpose in life are those who do not value materials objects. The people that survived the concentration camps were the ones who had a sense of meaning. They could imagine life outside and didn’t give up, in hope they would once escape. They found their purpose in knowledge. . Anderson: I like that you brought up the purpose in life as having knowledge. How do you think the education system should work? Callenbach: I think the current K-12 system that is going on is too constricting. Kids don’t have the freedom to learn what they want, it is all structured and standardized with tests. Anderson: The problem is that not all high schools are the same academically, some are better. So even though they are giving standardized tests it is not solving the problem of unequal schools. Callenbach: Structure is the problem with schools. Actually the facilities are the problem with school so are so restricting.
