In the first autobiography in the English language, Margery Kempe is characterized through her journey of a rough pregnancy, the depression that followed, and finding her faith in God, which had been lost. She comes across as weak and vulnerable. While reading the autobiography, a sense of pity is created for the character. She portrays herself as lost because she is in the process of reconnecting with her spirit. The autobiography reads, “And after she had conceived, she was troubled with severe attacks of sickness until the child was born” (Lines 3-4). This was the very first line that sets the tone of Margery Kempe being weak and vulnerable. As the reading goes on, Kempe creates a new image for herself as she rekindles her faith with God. She rids of the bad inside of her and shows she can overcome hardship. Kempe is a person filled with a life of ups and downs. In the chart there were many examples of Kempe’s personality, belief system, illness, and society. For personality, I believe Kempe is an open lady who is willing to try and make her struggling life better.
