Mark Sargent Monologue

In the small town of Hillfar, Texas, a young man by the name of Mark Sargent was

walking home from a long day of work at the Willsboro oil company on the west side of town.

He had been working for the company ever since he graduated high school and has never felt

like he was living up to his potential in life. Mark walks home the same way every day, but,

today was unlike any other day. To him, it just seemed…. Different. He was walking down

Wilmer Street when an older man stopped him. He had an almost familiar seeming face like he

had met him once before. The old man stopped Mark to ask him a question. He said softly, “Sir,

do you ever feel like you aren’t where you should be in your life? Like you deserve more than

He couldn’t

stand it any longer, his life has become a complete rut of an existence. He thought to himself “If

I take the elderly man up on his offer, what’s the harm? I really don’t believe in all that mumbo

jumbo anyways. I could be living the good life like the leaders of this country do and not have

the life a bum.” He wanted more. So, on that brisk August night he walked down Wilmer Street

He is now

in a large house that seems like something out of a fairy tale; laying on a huge bed with the

smoothest of silk sheets. He’s almost scared at the moment but says to himself, “This must be

what the old man has given to me.” He got a call from the phone on his bed side. He answered, a

man with a deep voice was on the other line. He says, “Mr. Sargent you have an executive

meeting at ten o’clock this morning. Would you like me to set up a car to pick you up?”

Reluctantly Mark responds, “Well, um… Yes please, thank you.” He finally got up and walks

into his new huge closet and picks out a new cashmere suit from his almost endless options. He

walks down to get into the car that is waiting on him outside. When he arrives to the office, he is

stunned to see what he sees. His name on the building! He goes in expecting to receive a

gracious welcome but does not. He is given the cold shoulder to anyone who encounters
