Mark, an intimidating 17-year-old boy, ended up in Short Term 12 because his mother was abusive. He is turning 18-years-old soon, which means that he will be kicked out of Short Term 12 and will be left to fend on his own out in the real world. This is causing him to lash out a bit and request / do odd things that are not understood by most at first, but have extreme symbolism that is discovered later on by other characters. Mark is a complex implicit character. His complexities, according to to the Matrix System True Colors Personality Test, make him a green type personality. This is not true, however, when they have been provoked. This is true for Mark. Usually, he keeps to himself. He usually spends most of his time in his room either writing rap lyrics or watching his pet fish swimming around its bowl. This is not true when Mark deals with his dramatic foil, Sammy. Sammy is a loud and obnoxious orange type personality. At every turn, they butt heads with each other. One day, Sammy took it too far and talked about Mark’s abusive mother. Mark then, “cocks his head, wondering if he heard correctly. Sammy keeps walking but Mark spins around and hits him hard on the side of the head with the plastic bat” (Cretton 34). Obviously, bringing up Mark’s abusive mother would make Mark upset. This led to them fighting each other and Grace having to break up the fight. Photo 2 can also be seen as somebody gripping very tight on nothing. Mark is usually very calm but when Sammy provoked him he became upset but did not act on it too strongly. This is true for many green type personalities. Mark lives by the motto “respect is earned, not given.” This can be seen when Scott, the inexperienced newbie line staffer, refers to the children of Short Term 12 as “underprivileged.” Mark retaliated by snarling, “Can you please have him leave our meeting until he knows what the hell he's talking about then?” After Scott’s initial comments, Mark does not listen to or respect Scott for the rest of the story. This is a stark contrast from how he interacts with Grace, who is by far the most respected person at Short Term 12. Mark would not dream of treating Grace that way. Marks trait of respect is earned is best displayed in Photo 1. The picture shows a hang hanging on to a pole. This can represent respect is earned by how easily people can hold on to the respect Mark gives out.
