Mark Twain “The secret of getting ahead is getting started” Samuel Langhorne Clemens a.k.a. Mark Twain got started shifting type papers, for the Hannibal Journal which eventually led to a career in journalism. Twain is known for writing reality in an such a manner that captivated readers. Twain's family moved to Hannibal Mississippi in 1839 and he grew up there during the civil war era giving the writer a lot of inspiration throughout his writings. Two of his most famed novels, The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn were based strongly on his childhood in Hannibal.(Sirs 1). ( Sirs 1)A man who was able to catch the lost america in words. The Mississippi River fascinated Twain so much that he decided to work for his very own pilot licence by the age of twenty five. He decided to travel west in the mid 1960’s and by the time he was forty he was an international celebrity ( Ornery and Extraordinary 1). He left Hannibal to escape from the war and hopefully run into riches in California in 1864. He went on later in life voicing his experiences through lectures. He always spoke with some experience he had in mind, however some of his experiences affected his overall style of writing. When he married into a rich family his writings became what seem to be more respectful to his higher class. He gained such popularity by using humor to lighten the pain of the real world. G.K. Chesterton described him as an, “unfathomably solemn man-- always serious to the point of madness”. Twain's mindset a s a thinker and philosopher made him dwell on life, but this gave power to his writings.
