To Be an American One Must Be Determined To be an American you don’t have to be born in America or white. America is the most diverse country in the world. One thing all Americans share are how determined they are. To be an American is to be determined in the American enlightenment, American romanticism, American realist, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn all shared this common characteristic. During the American Enlightenment it shows to be an American is to have to be determined. One example during the American enlightenment was “Sinners in a Hand in an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards. This short story shows to be determined to determine your future. Edwards writes, “the sun does not willingly shine upon you light to serve sin and Satan; the earth does not willingly yield her increase to satisfy your lusts; nor is it willingly a stage for your wickedness to be acted upon; the air does not willingly serve you for breath to maintain the flame of life in your vitals, while you spend your life in the service of Gods enemies” (Edwards 51). The only example during this time period is “Corn Pone Opinions” by Mark Twain. Twain writes, “ he interrupted his preaching, now and then, to saw a stick of wood; but the sawing was a pretense he did it with his mouth; exactly imitating the sound the bucksaw makes in shrieking its way through the wood. But it served its purpose; it kept his master from coming out to see how the work was getting along” (Twain 1). This shows determination because he was willing to make a noise just to make sure his master didn’t come to check on him.
