Mark Twain starts the book The Prince and the Pauper with the introduction to Tom Canty, a beggar. Tom lives in London with his poor family that consists of his mother, father, two sisters, his grandma, and Father Andrew. To escape the current circumstances, Tom fantasized about heroes and royalty from the stories Father Andrew told. Tom’s only goal in life was to meet a real prince face-to-face. One day Tom started walking around London with no set destination and later found himself at the gates of the King of England’s castle. Inside the gate was the Prince of Wales. Tom was then shoved away by a guard and the prince had pity on Tom. Tom was invited into the castle and was fed well. Both Tom and Edward, the prince, expressed the want for a change in life style. Tom voiced that he wanted to try on the prince’s clothes. The two swapped outfits and looked in the mirror. To their surprise there was no difference. Tom looked like Edward, and Edward looked like Tom.
After Tom and Edward realized that they looked the same, Edward ran off to go punish the guard for mistreating Tom, but he was thrown out into the street. For many weeks, he was mistaken for the pauper Tom …show more content…

The book was fun to read and easy to follow. When reading the book, I wanted to continue reading in order to discover what would happen to Tom and Edward next. Mark Twain did not use any fancy techniques to tell his story. There was no flash backs or major time changes. Mark Twain also describes what England was like in the sixteenth century even though none of the events in the book truly happened. For example, Mark Twain describes parts of London as “very narrow and crooked and dirty” and the characters use old English when they talk. For example, Edward says “If that I could but clothe me in raiment like to thine, and strip my feet and revel in the mud once, just once, with none to rebuke me of forbid, meseemeth I could forego the
