Mark Watney Character Analysis

Mark Watney has shown a lot of personality throughout the first few chapters of The Martian. He possesses many character traits. A few of them include courage, determination, confidence, intelligence, problem solver, a sense of humor, positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and lastly he’s dedicated. The traits I feel he showed the the strongest in a sense of humor, a strong work ethic, a problem solver, intelligence, and a positive attitude.

He shows a sense of humor multiple times throughout the first few chapters. Evidence that he shows a sense of humor is “I may as well yell toward Earth for all the good that damned thing will do me”(Pg. 11). This goes on when he’s trying to get the communications array to work. When he can’t get it to work he makes a joke instead of giving up, I think this is also how he keeps a positive attitude. This is evident because he said “Ugh this is backbreaking work! I spent twelve hours today on EVAs to bring dirt into the Hab”(Pg. 14). This shows he’s a hard worker because he spent half of a day carrying in dirt, without stopping. Another clue that he has a strong work ethic is when he first woke to find he was stranded on Mars he wasted no time thinking of a plan. “I didn’t want to just die out on the surface”(Pg. 6). This shows how he didn’t just want to let starvation and lack of water kill him. He wanted to think of a way to live and survive. Also when he was trying to fit all the farmland in the Hab, he used a lot of math and figured it all out on his own.

He’s also a problem solver. This is evident because he’s stranded on Mars and he figures out a way to survive with what he has on Mars. “”...that leaves enough food to feed six people for fifty days”(Pg.8). “All six EVA suits are here”(Pg. 8).
