In the movie The Martian, an astronaut named Mark Watney is left on Mars after a storm hit him and his shipmate’s base. While everyone was evacuating, Mark was left behind because everyone thought that he had died in the storm. When he regains his consciousness, Mark realizes that he has been left alone on Mars; he must find a way to survive and call for help. Mark experienced many dangerous occurrences during his stay at Mars some of which nearly lead to his death. His first and most important issue was obtaining food. Luckily, he specializes in botany, so he easily found his way out of his predicament with his idea of a small potato farm. However, there was a whole other issue within the project of making a small farm: he needed water. In order to create water, he needed to have a good grasp on chemistry and how to use the tools needed to make water. As everything began to seem well, another disaster strikes his short term peace which was the destruction of his potato farm. Strong winds were passing through his base one night; they became so strong that sections of his farming area and a door in his main base was ripped off. All of his crops immediately wilted once they were exposed to the martian atmosphere. He had to try and replace the door that had been torn off his base with a durable material. Unfortunately, he could not find any tools or dense material to use to cover up the large hole, so he ended up using tarp and special duct tape as a temporary solution. After this major loss, Mark had no choice but to begin surviving on smaller rations based on what he had already
