Marlee Matlin once said, “We aren’t handicapped in any way except by what other people think. Focus on people’s abilities. Her career can help people realize they can do anything if they try hard enough for it. Marlee Matlin is an inspiration to many people’s lives and beliefs about the deaf, including myself. Marlee Matlin is known for her acting career, was chosen by me as a topic because of how inspiring she is, and helps me continue to learn more about deaf people and the Deaf community.
Marlee Matlin is a well known actress. At the age of 18 months, she contracted roseola and lost her hearing (Putz). At age 21, Matlin received the Oscar for Best Actress (Matlin). Along with this award, she has won the Academy Award for Best Actress, the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama, serves as the national celebrity spokesperson for The American Red Cross, was appointed by President Clinton for the Corporation for National Service, served as Chairperson for National Volunteer Week in 1994,

She helped me realize an ample amount of information on deaf people and even what I can do in the future. If everyone held the same attitude as Matlin about their lives and what they could do, many would not be quite as hard on themselves when they make a mistake. Deaf people can lead successful lives just like hearing people. The only difference is sometimes deaf people may have to work a little harder because of they way they are treated. Deaf people should be treated as equal and nothing less. To quote Marlee Matlin, “ You can do anything if you set your mind to it. Look out for kids, help them dream and be inspired.
