In the novels ‘Don’t call me Ishmael’ and ‘The pain, My mother, Sir Tiffy, Cyber boy & Me’ the two main characters are represented by the use of figurative language. The author Michael Bauer used a male and female protagonist to illustrate some of the differences between their personalities. Maggie, the main character in ‘The pain & Me’ is represented as an aggressive and selfish person who had hardship in her life and is struggling to deal with it however towards the end of the book she becomes less judgemental and has a better outlook on life. Bauer uses capitalisation and hyperbole to highlight these traits. The word that creates the zeugma is the word lived, as the narrator uses the word lived to mean different things in the same context. The narrator actually lived off of paychecks and government food, but did not literally live off of hope and fear like the line suggests. The line is also a hyperbole because the author did not literally live off of the hope and fear, as you cannot sustain yourself with emotions.

Figurative language is the glue to all poetry writing. It is what holds poetry together and without it, poetry would be plain and boring. Figurative language adds depth and creates a whole new dimension full of possibilities that readers can enjoy. The song The End uses rhyme which is a repetition of similar sounds in two or more words. An example is presented in the second stanza in lines four and six, “You were the sun,” “My hands were your guns.” Rhyme is applied in these lines to support why he admires the woman.

In Schools: Most individuals and organizations who champion the cause of media literacy recognize that it one of the most practical and effective ways to develop critical media literacies among the youth would be to incorporate media literacy in the school curriculum across K-12. Programs in schools can help students to access, analyse, evaluate and create media messgaes. Introducing and sensitizing them to the various issues related to media at such an early age could contribute to a responsive and healthy understanding of the media through the rest of their lives. This foundation could only be built upon in time with more access and more exposure to various media
