“Homeland is something one becomes aware of only through its loss, Gunter Grass.” In Peter Gay’s memoir, My German Question, he articulates what it was like living in Germany with the presence of the Nazis or in his own experience the lack there of. Peter lived in a family that didn’t directly practice Judaism and most German families didn’t perceive them as Jews until the Nazis defined what a Jew was to the public. The persecution of other Jewish families in Germany where far worse than what Peter experienced growing up. There was a major contrast between how Gay’s family was treated and how other Jews who actively practiced the religion in Germany were treated which played a contributing factor for why the family stayed so long before they left.
Night, written by Elie Wiesel, is a book that recounts the author's experiences as a Jewish teenager during the Holocaust. This book is intresting because it shows people who have never experienced or learned about the Holocaust the horrors of it. It shows poeple why history should never repeat and why people should tell there story. What would you do if history repeated and there was another Holocaust? In this essay, I will analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of the rhetorical strategies used by Wiesel to achieve his purpose, including his central idea, intended audience, and message, as well as his use of ethos, pathos, and logos throughout the book.

Marcus Luttrell, a navy seal, was one of nineteen military combatants that survived a major fire fight in the mountains of Afghanistan on June 28th, 2005. Being rescued by a small pashtun village, Luttrell received protection against the vicious taliban for weeks until evacuated. The book encompasses more than just a significant battle story, yet rather thematic elements that are relatable to the everyday person. Christopher Browning documents everyday experiences and tribulations of Germany men, who were involved in the tragic events of the Holocaust. Browning tries illustrate the reasoning of all the massacres caused by the Reserve Police Battalion 101, so that people could get a clear understanding of what really was going on with these men, physically and mentally. Looking past all the opposing claims of German men, Browning explains how these men were just regular “middle aged family men” who were taking basic orders from higher authorities (1). Throughout the book Ordinary Men, Christopher Browning explains his reasoning of calling these murders ordinary men, the reasoning behind all the massacres, and how these men later on became killers.
Art Spiegelman 's MAUS, remains a work credited much for its being a new kind of literary oeuvre paying attention to the Holocaust. As narrated by a second generation Holocaust survivor, the work brings together occurrences through the dreadful historical event narrating the struggles of a Jewish American working to fortify his individual comprehension of the brutal execution of his people by the Nazi rule in the lead up to the Second World War (Doherty, 1996). Having not been born at the time of the holocaust, the author needed to find the best way of expressing some of the aspects of this unspeakable, unexplainable and above all, unforgettable event. Aristotle wrote, “It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light (Aristotle)”. The Holocaust was one of the darkest times humanity has ever seen. A machination brewed by an extraordinarily perverse man that resulted in the deaths of millions, and robbed millions more of their faith and hope. Families were torn apart, towns were destroyed, and humanity lost, all to satisfy one man’s extreme racism and psychotic agenda. If however, one only chooses to focus on the darkness, they might overlook the light, specifically in the two stories of boys who survived against all odds and shared their tales years after defying death.

It’s difficult to imagine the way humans brutally humiliate other humans based on their faith, looks, or mentality but somehow it happens. On the novel “Night” by Elie Wiesel, he gives the reader a tour of World War Two through his own eyes , from the start of the ghettos all the way through the liberation of the prisoners of the concentration camps. This book has several themes that develop throughout its pages. There are three themes that outstand from all the rest, these themes are brutality, humiliation, and faith. They’re the three that give sense to the reading.
Critical Summary Victor Frankl ’s “Experiences from a Concentration Camp” from his book Man’s Search for Meaning details the everyday occurances of the average prisoner in a concentration camp. Through a series of brief stories accounting his experience in concentration camps, Frankl vividly depicts the suffering that he and other prisoners experienced and how these experiences affected them mentally.
