Most people have heard about Martin Luther King Jr. His powerful speeches and even more powerful testimonies. He wasn’t even talking about color in his speeches. There was one person before him that was also a powerful speaker.
For decades many civil rights leaders and activists fought for rights and equality. None of this was even taken into consideration until King came into play in the 1950s (Fighting For Equal Rights in America par. 2.) As the central figure of civil rights for African Americans, Martin Luther, forced action and change in our nation, and changed opinions of not only African Americans, but whites too. Through his powerful and emphatic speeches, white people began to believe that King was right and that segregation was not right.
“I have a dream,” this was the speech that Martin Luther King Jr. gave at the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963. The crowd was estimated at about 250,000 people. You may think you know everything Martin Luther King Jr. did and went through, but do you really know him? Michael King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929.
On April 4, 1968, just after 6 p.m., Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was fatally shot while standing on the balcony outside of his second story room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN. Dr. King was in Memphis supporting a sanitation workers’ strike and was on his way to dinner when a bullet suddenly struck him in the jaw, while he was on the balcony (Day). The bullet struck him in the right jaw, severed his spine and came to rest in his shoulder blade. Approximately one hour after being shot, Dr. King was pronounced deceased at the St. Joseph Hospital at 7:05 p.m. ("The Truth About Martin Luther King Jr.'S Assassination").
MLK 50th Celbration This event was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. visiting Sacramento State's campus and giving a speech. Sacramento state was the only California State University that Martin Luther King visited. This mainly was because he was not welcomed at the other universities.

Some other African Americans wanted to have those rights, but were too scared of the obstacles to try and achieve this.
