Martin Luther King Jr. “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter” (brainyquote.com). Martin Luther King Jr. spoke these words on March 8, 1965. Martin was a man that truly did not believe in segregation, he even said: “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal” (ushistory.org).

Martin was jailed at least 29 times and assaulted 4. On December 21st, 1956 after the supreme court of the United States had declared unconstitutional laws requiring segregation on buses Negroes and whites rode equally. During that Boycott, King was arrested, his home was bombed, he was a subject to personal abuse, but at the same time, he emerged as a Negro leader of the first rank. In 1957 he was elected president of the Southern Christian leadership conference, an organization formed to produce new leadership for the new bargaining Civil Rights Movement. In an eleven year period through 1957 and 1968 King traveled over 6 million miles and spoke over 2,500 times showing up whenever there was injustice, protests, and action. In 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. was named the man of the year by time magazine and was awarded five honorary degrees. Martin directed the peaceful march in Washington, D.C of 250,000 people to which he delivered his speech “I have a dream” he met president John F. Kennedy during that speech. He made the first mark on the civil rights movement by mobilizing the black community during a 382-day boycott of the city's bus lines. When King was 35 he was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, which he turned over the prize money of $54,123 ($400,000 today) to the Civil Rights Movement.
