Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, and is remembered as one of greatest peace leaders in world history. In 1955, King led the Montgomery Bus Boycott which helped lead to desegregation of transportation. This was a major step in the civil rights movement during the late 1950’s. In 1957, King was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which was an organization dedicated to helping the civil rights movement. In 1963, he led a peaceful campaign aimed at Birmingham, Alabama which was known as the most segregated place in America. King also wrote “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” at this time to capture the essence of segregation in this city. Also in 1963, King was one of the leaders of the March on Washington
