Throughout centuries, peaceful resistance has been a form of protest against governments that has positively benefited those in rebellion. As seen throughout America over the years, many have toppled social reforms such as equal rights, same sex marriage, and women’s suffrage with the strategy of peaceful confrontation. This form of defiance has allowed people to share their perspective on issues without causing any physical harm. Although many people have suffered and accepted the consequences of these protests, the overall outcome has aided the vast majority of people. This may seem like only a minor detail in regards to a social issue, but, unity in favor of quiet resistance can create a strong sense of identity throughout a crowd or nation. This is so precisely demonstrated in Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” and many of his speeches which sparked such a solidified identity for many people during that time period. As most of us know, Martin Luther led many happenings of peaceful resistance which later evolved into the laws of segregation being abolished. Luther and his followers displayed, and will forever show, the remarkable task of overcoming government laws through peaceful protests and unity. Martin Luther not only inspired his own people to change perspectives, but also those others of many different colors, races, religions, beliefs, etc. He truly spoke of equality for all and demonstrated how civil disobedience can benefit a free society.
