Bob Marley expressed, “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain”. This unyielding truth can be uttered by anyone, anywhere. Music is a universal language that all people understand. It doesn’t have to be in the native language spoken because feeling is most important. Music has the ability to be versatile in every way and it is the truest form of freedom of speech. Music can have a strong message or just tell an everyday story of love and laughs. There are many different genres of music – classical, rock, pop, hip-hop and lots more. Music has transitioned over the years, but the emotions evoked have not. The lyrics, political message and social influence are prevalent on people today, especially the youth.
For instance, lyrics of a song can bring awareness to controversial topics. Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On?”, recorded in 1971, had powerful lyrics that questioned the state of chaos the world was in at that time. Music effects the mind, spirit and behavior. Both, Marvin Gaye and Macklemore expressed their concerns of rising issues at hand. Marvin wanted change for a world divided by race and hate, whereas Macklemore argued for inclusion and equality. Equally, both songs had a large impact on society and the way people felt. These artists intentionally wrote songs to bring awareness and influence listeners to incite change and progress. With that said, artist must be aware of issues and how it cultivates their music. Music is heard by many, intentionally or unintentionally, so with their platform, these artists decided to be brave and truly express what was on their mind.
