The text is relevant to my study of the novel, because it does a good job explaining the literary lens I wish to analyse the novel with. The text also helps clarifying some of the events and symbols from the novel. When they are looked upon though the Marxist lens, these symbols and events again a deeper meaning than before. The text also gives examples of capitalist America, the same setting as the novel, this information can be taken to make historical connections with the novel, and can further my understanding of the plot and characters.
- The Marxism acknowledges the fact that it is an ideology, but also states that it is a belief system that views the world correctly; from the socioeconomic conditions that drive it. Marxists believe that the relationship between socioeconomic classes are the root of all human events, and explains that all human events in terms of distribution and dynamics of economic power
- According to the Marxist theory, the upper class uses ideologies to manipulate the lower and middle class into working for them. These ideologies are used to convince the working class that they are equivalent to those in power.

However, due to the ideology that one can make money if they tried, the middle class cling to this ideology as hope to one day make it to the upper class. While resenting the low class for not doing the same when so much of the middle class tax money goes to the government which is supposed to help the poor. The middle class fails to realize two important socioeconomic facts: that the upper class is in control, so they make the middle class pay taxes, also the fact that the lower class receives only a small fraction of the taxes, since most of the taxes are pocketed by the upper
