Mary Breckinridge is one of the most prominent character in Nursing. who “founded the Frontier Nursing services in 1925” ( Harkness & DeMarco 2016, P.17).She introduced a model rural health care system into the United States in 1925. To provide professional services to neglected people of a thousand-square mile area in southeastern Kentucky, she created a decentralized system of nurse-midwives, district nursing centers, and hospital facilities. Originally called the Kentucky Committee for Mothers and Babies, later the Frontier Nursing Service (FNS), the system lowered the rate of death in childbirth in Leslie County, Kentucky, from the highest in the nation to substantially below the national average. She is the originator of nurse-midwifery to the United States " In 1982, Breckinridge was inducted into the American Nurses Association's Hall of Fame for her contributions to the nursing profession in women's health, community and family nursing, and rural health care delivery. (Castlenovo,2016). It is a well deserve honor. Mary made a strong influence to nursing and its community. She laid a strong pathway to modern midwifery all over United states and the world.
