Mary Fields, also known as Stagecoach Mary and Black Mary. In(1832–1914),she was the first African-American woman star route mail carrier in the United States. She was not an employee of the United States Post Office. The Post Office Department did not hire or employ mail carriers for star routes, it awarded star route contracts to persons who proposed the lowest qualified bids, and who in accordance with the Department’s application process posted bonds and sureties to substantiate their ability to finance the route. Once a contract was obtained, the contractor could then drive the route themselves, sublet the route, or hire an experienced driver.

Mary Surratt was an innocent woman who was accused of helping John Wilkes Booth with the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. She got hanged for it, but the person who actually did do something to help John Wilkes, Dr Mudd, didn’t get hanged, he got life in prison.
Mary Surratt should have been executed because she lied to the authorities. Mary lied to the authorities about knowing the people who shot Lincoln. Mary is guilty for Lincoln assassination because she was involved with the people who killed Lincoln and gave them weapons. In source 3, it says “I want you to have those shooting irons ready.” That meant that she had weapons and told the people who shot Lincoln to get them ready.
What Mary Surratt’s Sentence Should’ve Actually Been Mary Surratt should have not been executed, but she should have instead received a prison sentence to life. This is because of her participation in the Lincoln assassination conspiracy and her dishonesty. First of all, she was partially in the conspiracy meaning that she was not one of the original co-conspirators. In Source 2 it says, “It is possible that Mary knew of the kidnapping plot but not the plan to kill Lincoln.”

Mary was born August 5, 1861 in Belleville,IL to Henry and Lavinia Richmond. She was raised by her grandmother and two aunts in Baltimore, MD after her parents died. She grew up around racial problems, suffrage, social, and political beliefs. Because she grew up around those things she started becoming a critical thinker and social activism. Richmond was home schooled because her grandmother and aunts were not familiar with the traditional education system until the age of eleven when she entered public school.
She knew what was going to happen, she knew Booth’s plot, but she didn’t do anything to help him with his plot. What have they done that had to do with Booth’s plot? Why did this action not deserve the death penalty? Mary Surratt did not deserve the death penalty she received because she wasn’t fully involved with the assassins, yes she knew what they were doing and she did help them a bit but she didn’t have a role IN the assassinations, she didn’t murder anyone and she didn’t try to. I. The Facts and Legal Issues On April 27, 1913, Mary Phagan, a thirteen-year-old girl, was found strangled on the floor of the National Pencil Factory in Marietta, Alabama. While originally the guard of the factory was questioned for the murder; Leo Frank, the factory's manager, was tried and convicted for the murder. Frank was indicted for the murder of Mary Phagan by the grand jury; then, was sent to trial where he was officially convicted for the murder and sentenced the death penalty.
He was captured, wounded, and taken to trial, where he was found guilty of treason, murder, and inciting insurrection. He was hanged on December 2, 1859, becoming one of the first martyrs of the Civil War.

Sometimes the United States forgets that not only American soldiers were being wounded and that not only U.S. families were receiving devastating news about a family member, but also Vietnamese families. Americans need to understand that although the Vietnamese caused damage to the U.S., the U.S. delivered just as much destruction in return. Several nurses and medics tried to heal severe injuries caused to American soldiers.
