Mary was no ordinary child mind you. She got delivered into slavery at a very, very young age. She got sold to a caring and kind slave owner named Mrs. Eliza Van Lew. When Mary was still at a young age, Mrs. Van Lew found out that Mary had intelligence that was above-average. That isn't the amazing part about her though.
She leaves her house and heads out for a thrill seeking journey where she encounters new friends, finds love, and explores how the real world works. Reading this story, I could understand exactly how she was feeling because she was basically writing in a journal. Since she was the “author” she would directly characterize what she was doing or how she felt. An example of a direct characterization would be Mary’s main line “I am Mary Iris Malone and I am not okay.”

Kelli Raque Ms. Stout Creative Writing 26 April, 2023 TW In St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves by Karen Russell the reader follows a collection of short stories told by many perspectives. From the four that the class read there are many literary devices used, one that really stuck out was how she decided to tell the stories and who told them. Russell uses point of view effectively throughout a lot of her stories, by making the narrator a younger kid telling the story it helps provide to the magical realism in the book and also lets the readers have different interpretations of the story and debate if it's all real magic or just the magic of childhood. She uses ethos, logos, and pathos to reach to her audience. When using pathos she appealed to emotions, for example, “No one in this room tonight can feel free from such participation”(Kelley 65) making the audience feel a sort of guilt and fault in unison. Also, she states, “Tonight while we sleep, several thousand little girls will be working in textile mills, all the night through, 20 in the deafening noise of the spindles and the looms spinning and weaving cotton and wool, silks and ribbons for us to buy”(Kelley 18), this creates an image of horror, of the inhumane treat towards the children, it makes the audience look at themselves as participants of this ongoing issue, feel pity, sadness and frustration, feeling like there is nothing they can do to help. Afterwards, she uses credibility such as acquired knowledge from past experiences in order to make her message credible. To portray credibility she uses specifics we unconsciously choose to ignore such as, “The children make our shoes in the shoe factories; they knit our stockings, our knitted underwear in the knitting factories”(Kelley 66), in addition to the fact that she probably witnessed these events.

Today, both the young and the aging can relate to Dorian, who could not imagine becoming old.

Mary Maloney makes up an act and gets away with the murder. Mary Maloney is a dynamic character because she changes throughout the story. She changes from a caring and loving wife to a murderer and a crazy person. Mary has more traits like caring, ruthless and clever.
