Materialism Materialism is defined as “a tendency to consider material possessions and physical comfort as more important than spiritual values.”. In our current society of consumerism and industrialism, developed countries of the world are also facing a huge increase in materialistic values. The background colours of the poster are purple and green. These colours are opposing on the colour wheel, and therefore contrast nicely. The purple side of the poster is featured behind the “wealthier” side of the poster, which is representative of the topic of materialism. The watercolour gradient effect represents the scale of wealth and materialistic tendency, as every person is not simply materialistic, or in poverty. The first is a photo clearly taken in a poverty-stricken nation. It features a bunch of children, who are lying on piles of rubbish and clutter, still with smiles on their faces. This shows that materialism has not taken over the lives of these children. They are still happy experiencing their lives with almost nothing, laying together on piles of garbage. The right photo is taken in a sweat-shop. This is involved with materialism, as in developed nations, the concept of “fast fashion” has taken over the lives of many. This is the process of people buying cheap clothing that they wear once and then dispose of, leading to other problems such as waste. Another negative aspect of this is that most of this sort of clothing is made in Asian sweatshops such as these, where the workers (usually young children) experience very poor working conditions and usually aren’t paid for the work they do. Consequently, the clothing is so cheap for consumers to buy, in countries like America and Australia. It is our job to consider as consumers, if it is worth paying more for an item of clothing, being able to know that nobody was taken advantage of in the
