Math Capstone Project

1252 Words6 Pages

Students often wonder when they will use the skills they learn in class in their lives. Through this project, students will use their knowledge of unit rates, proportional relationships, percentages, area, and measurement to design a house. Teams will need to meet their client’s needs to create a house within their budget that uses sustainable resources. Teams will collaborate with professionals from the field to create blueprints. Additionally, each team will create a scale model of their design and develop a presentation to their client, including their budget. Moreover, teams will use actual architectural software to create their blueprints. Teams will conduct research to gain insights on current trends in sustainable resources and building …show more content…

They crave a connection between what they are learning, and what they will use. Math feels to be one of the content areas that is plagued with this the most. While brainstorming ideas to engage my students, I developed a capstone project for my math 7 class. Students within my Math 7 class will answer the question: “How can we create a sustainable house of the future?”
This project will encompass all the various skills they will have learned throughout their academic year. They will work as a team to design a house that is futuristic and utilizes sustainable materials/power sources. Integrating this project demonstrates to students how the various theorems and skills they learned in class apply to engineering, architecture, and science.
Moreover, through observation of the class, I have gathered that students struggle with applying their knowledge in new and creative ways. Through this project, students will have to problem solve and think critically, to develop a house that is not only sustainable, futuristic, but also cost effective. Many students may be faced with a task within their lifetime of building their own house. This project foreshadows the process that is needed to complete this …show more content…

Students will learn how to apply their knowledge within this project through numerous means. They will be given the opportunity to speak to an experts in fields such as engineering, architecture, and construction. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to learn through videos, and technology.
Higher Order Thinking Skills
Within this project, students will be apply their learning into creative ways. They will need to problem solve to create a house that is sustainable or made out of renewable resources. Therefore, students need to think critically, and analyze the current trends in construction and see how it can change or be used. Students need to create a design that fits within a certain budget to meet their client’s needs. This requires analyzing and problem solving. Additionally, they have to apply their knowledge of various polygon properties to determine lengths, measurements and area to calculate cost.
