Matthew Milat Murder Case Essay

On the 20th of November 2010, Matthew Milat and Cohen Klein brutally tortured and murdered David Auchterlonie on the outskirts of Belanglo State Forest in New South Wales. They have both pleaded guilty to the charge of murder in the first degree, with special circumstances of it being pre-meditated, objective seriousness, actual use of a weapon, committed in company and gratuitous cruelty. Milat received imprisonment for 43 year with a non-parole period of 30 years and Klein received imprisonment for 32 years with a non-parole period of 22 years. A few times during the day there were telephone calls or messages between David and Milat or Klein. That evening the David was at his friend Chase Day's home. The telephone calls and messages continued. In one of the calls Milat, who was used Klein's telephone, convinced David to go with them to the Belanglo State Forest. David told Day that Milat had called him earlier in the day, "asking him to go out to Belanglo to have a few drinks and a bit of fun."

Later that evening Milat and Klein collected David and Day in Milat's car. This was between about 8.30pm and 9.30pm. After picking them up Milat drove the car into the Belanglo State Forest. Klein was in the front passenger seat and the other two were in the back seat. When they were a short distance into the forest Milat parked the car. He got out and went to the back of the car, beside the boot. At that point David got into the front seat and started to cut up some

Finally Milat swung the axe and struck the deceased in the back of his head. The sound of the axe hitting the deceased was caught in the recording. David would of died instantly. Immediately after the final blow happened the recording was stopped.

Milat then returned to the car, carrying the axe. A little later Day got out of the car and went to where David was lying. He dragged him into an area away from the road where he and Milat covered the David’s body with branches from surrounding trees. The offenders and Day then got back into the car and the three of them drove back to Bargo. At 11.30 that night Milat and Klein went to the home of some friends whose first names were, Ken and Sarah. They both just acted as though nothing had happened and went along living their lives
