Reflection 3: Denver PD On April 13, 2023, Sergeant Damon Bowser and Crime Analyst Samantha Diemer of the Denver Police Department attended our course to speak about policing gangs in Denver, as well as describing the roles of gang units and crime analysts within. Bowser began the presentation speaking about his role in the gang unit as the investigative supervisor, which included all gang crimes going directly to him, as well as all juvenile with handgun cases and graffiti cases. He describes how Denver initially emerged a need for a gang unit when gangs became dangerous and required a head on response, which has led to few positive outcomes, as the following question arises: Why monitor gangs if they aren’t illegal? The police force we all know has one main focus, to protect people and the property in which they stand. Patrolling the areas in which they are assigned to, they make sure civilians follow the law and they handle any breakage of the law as well. Our police force is supposed to make us feel safe wherever we are. They have undoubtedly done a great job in doing so. However, over the past couple of years, the police force has taken a toll for the worse.
Moskos, a harvard trained sociologist describes what is was like to work as a police officer in Baltimore’s Eastern district. As a young new police officer, Moskos was placed in the Eastern district, which is a very high crime area, one of the most dangerous areas in the United States. Moskos contends that when officers are fresh out of the academy, they are usually placed in high crime districts. Since these areas are considered to be the least desired to work. So in a sense the ghetto becomes a real life training area.
During her Tedx Talk, she often talks about 21st Century Policing and how it should be standardized in general. In addition, she focuses especially on the first pillar: building trust and legitimacy. The commissioner see community policing not as an expression, but as a philosophy that must be woven into a police organization. She recognizes that there are two groups in society: the police and the citizens. To fix this, the police need to involve the community, not just deal with it.

In the industrialized world of 2V, where all crimes a punished by work, lived a confident, but slightly insecure policeman named Ralph Darzi. Being part of the 2V police force was not an easy job. Titled, Convert Task Division (CTD for short), the 2V dictator’s secret police were under strict rules. Ten years ago, Ralph joined the CTD out of necessity and to make ends meet. He by no means, agreed with the rules, but could not find another job.

The Netflix documentary series “Flint Town” exposes the state of policing present in Flint, Michigan. With Flint consistently being one of the most violent and dangerous cities in America, whilst simultaneously being victims of a city-wide water contamination crisis, the police force is under immense stress to protect the members of the community. The documentary shows the stark differences between Flint and policing in Australia, with the extreme prevalence of violence being a major theme throughout the series. Before viewing Flint Town, I was truly unaware of the extreme amount of crime and violence that was present in some communities in America, and how dangerous it could be to be a police officer. While not on a scale anywhere near the events ASAC Kowenhover and Chief Belmar were in charge of, the community I police has been in a crisis of its own. In recent years the precinct I oversee has been subjected to brutal gang violence. There have been seventeen gang related homicides, many of the victims, teenagers, have resulted in federal prosecutions. Weekly meetings with members of the FBI Gang Task Force, HSI and my agency have helped develop trust and eased coordination with the continuing investigations. Each agency has a role and cooperates fully with the other agencies.
The federal dollar began to flow and agencies were getting equipment and training. Local police forces used their funds to get military equipment. A retired police in New Haven said, “I was offered tanks, bazookas, anything I wanted”(74). Obviously, we as a society are not getting what we need from our nation’s police. Justice system
Although it is questionable, that policing in America has different time periods. There is an agreement of three major eras of policing in America. Those three era's are, The Political Era, Reform, and Community Policing. (Cheeseman et al. , Chapter 3)
From a time immorial the police have been a very intrigal part of the our social life. Be it the gupta period or the shivajian era, or the dark times of the east india company. Police has been omni present in the social order. One can not overlook the importance of police in the peaceful wellbeing of the state. But with the change in the attitude of the state towords its citizens the roll of police has also changed.
