Night is a literary memoir of Elie Wiesel’s catastrophe in the concentration camps during the Holocaust. Throughout his recollection, the imagery used leaves no doubt in the reader’s imagination about the horrors Elie experienced. His diction and use of detail made his moral of the story as clear as glass.

A motif is symbol or image that is constantly referred to in the text. In this paper we will focus on the motif of night and it’s significance to the story telling.

Eli Wiesel's Book Night was created to create Diction, Imagery, and Pathos to show the dangers of losing faith and the fear of not caring about others' suffering. Throughout the book, He uses imagery to show how being in these conditions can make you not care about others' suffering. For example in the book when he says “When the SS were tried and they were replaced.

This is all to show a few different meanings. Firstly, the title itself represents the darkness and anguish the Jews experienced. One way Wiesel expresses this meaning is through figurative language, for example, “The days resembled the nights, and the nights left in our souls the dregs of their darkness (Wiesel 94).”
“In that instant I feel the thinness of his arms.” Rodriguez states this about his father and the current state that he is in. This is the first encounter and time Rodriguez and his father exchanged words that night. The reader can infer that his father is still upset about him being fluent in English. Rodriguez also notices the state his father is in and that he is getting old and that his mother looks very sad.

Throughout the book, Wiesel uses symbolism, imagery, and foreshadowing to portray the theme, just because you overcome darkness doesn’t mean you’ll feel the peace of light. Wiesel uses symbolism to depict how dark the time he spent in the Holocaust was. An example of this was when he said, “Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed” (Wiesel 34).
The word night can represent sleep and peacefulness, but it can also bring darkness and the unknown. The book focuses on the experiences Wiesel goes through during the Holocaust.

The Jewish New Year had just arrived and the Jews were gathered around the camp praying for new beginnings as well as safety from their god.
