Night is a memoir written by Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel. The Holocaust was a grueling time in history in which the purpose was to wipe out the Jewish population and race. Wiesel titled this memoir Night to symbolize a world without God's presence, lack of hope, and a loss of sense of humanity.

Night symbolizes a world without God’s presence because Wiesel’s experiences during the holocaust made him lose his faith and god and feel the emptiness that follows. The Jewish New Year had just arrived and the Jews were gathered around the camp praying for new beginnings as well as safety from their god. Wiesel was confused as to how they can pray to a god who has brought them nothing in return and after his anger is released, he just feels loneliness and he says, “My eyes were open and I was alone, terribly alone in a world without God and without man.” This quote shows …show more content…

After the long travel in the snow, they were shoved into cattle cars and Wiesel started to greatly feel the effect of what his life had become. Wiesel questions “Die today or tomorrow or later? The night was growing longer, never-ending.” This quote shows how the night was everlasting and the torture felt like it would never come to an end. To Wiesel it feels as if the night is growing longer the more their minds numb to the abuse, awaiting death. He no longer fears death or when it will come because the long lasting nights have taken away any hope he had. Night is usually associated with fear and the unknown, which made these experiences for Wiesel all the much worse because he was unprepared and scared. Over time Wiesel’s mind became accustomed to the never ending abuse making the nights harder to get through.
