On April 4th of 1928 Maya Angelou was born Marguerite Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri. She was given the name “Maya” by her brother, Bailey. Both Maya and Bailey were sent to live with their grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas after her parents divorced. When Maya went to visit her mother at the age of eight she was raped by her mother’s boyfriend.

I chose her because she inspires me to do more than what I am doing. While she was alive, she was an author, actress, screenwriter, dancer, and poet. This essay will talk about her life and her accomplishments and what she went threw.
By the time teen Maya Angelou was sixteen years old, she became pregnant with a baby boy, she named, Guy Johnson. Once Maya Angelou was no longer a young girl she was determined to travel outside of United States of America, making a huge difference and transitioning from girl to woman. Then finally Maya Angelou became a female African American Activist Civil Rights Leader who was famous for being a writer, singer, actress, author, director, stage and screen performer, also most well-known poet. Throughout her career, Angelou has earned several awards and accomplished many accomplishments, including receiving a Grammy award. Her best known art work was entitled, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
Maya Angelou was one of the most influential literary phenomenons, who created numerous inspiring works and paved the way for many African Americans, while facing discrimination and prejudices. She gave people hope through her countless works of literature and gave people an understanding to what it really feels like to be an African American. Throughout her life, Maya had a very traumatic childhood. Her parents, Vivian Baxter Johnson and Bailey Johnson, had gotten a divorce when she was 3 and she as well as her brother, were sent to live with her grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas.
Maya Angelou philosophy and teachings are timeless. There is a lesson to be learned in her more than 30 published works and her lessons taught as a professor and lecturer. More important she lived what she preached. She had a strong belief in humanity as a whole, in the human spirit and in the African American community. She fought tirelessly to change extinguish racism, prejudice and discrimination during a time when she herself as a black woman experienced its effects.

These quoted words came from a strong, wise minded, African American woman whose legacy still lives on. In the autobiography I Know The Caged Bird Sings: Maya Angelou, the story begins in California where three year old Maya Angelou and her four year old brother leave they're father to go live with they're paternal grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. They're grandmother runs a store there, which is the center of life in the Negro community of the town. Maya starts reading and enjoying literature while she is in Stamps, Shakespeare especially, along with other prominent black writers. Maya had many accomplishments in the 17 years recorded in I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. One of Maya Angelou's accomplishments in her 17 years in the story I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is when she secured a job as a conductorette.
When thinking of a historical figure, many imagine a president, king, or general that lead a country to greatness, but never realized some could be the ones who influence the minds of society. Although not thought of as anything, writers and poets hold the key to shaping the society’s mindset without even knowing it. Being a civil rights activist, social activist, and role model for women makes Maya Angelou a historical figure who has made a huge impact in American society and in American history. Born poor and black, she was a childhood victim of rape, shamed into silence. She was a young single mother who had to work at strip clubs for a living.

Her life experiences and courage helped others, and made her work influential. During Maya’s early life, she experienced many hardships that shaped her into the person many remember her as. Born on April 4, 1928, she only lived in St. Louis, MO for three years before her parents got divorced, and Maya, along with her mother and brother, moved in with her grandparents in Arkansas. Maya Angelou, an award winning poet once said, ”We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated.” She out of all people would be the one to know that. People would try and put her down because of her race, but she didn’t let them stop her. With a little determination and a whole lot of hard work, she was, and still is, one of the most famous poets ever.
Even though she didn't talk much of her youth, she didn't give up reading and learning new things having her become who she is today. Even though she didn't talk, she still helped her grandma at the store. The world in which Maya Angelou grew up and lived throughout much of her life was one wrought with the ills that slavery and oppression had left upon it. Despite the turbulence that Angelou grew up in, she was an imminently successful woman. Of all her accomplishments, two stand out, her successful career as a poet and her legacy as a civil rights activist. Maya Angelou lived through the inequality and senseless oppression of the African American people. The poem, Still I Rise, was written by Maya Angelou in 1978.
In regards to Maya Angelou’s life she said, “If we lose love and self respect for each other, this is how we finally die”("Maya Angelou Quotes" 2018). This was seen throughout her body of work. Maya was known for her eye catching work and the effort she put forth into it. She became known by writers and professionals, and was seen to be involved in the civil rights movement ( “Maya Angelou is born.” 2018).
