In the autobiography I Know The Caged Bird Sings: Maya Angelou, the story begins in California where three year old Maya Angelou and her four year old brother leave they're father to go live with they're paternal grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. They're grandmother runs a store there, which is the center of life in the Negro community of the town. Maya starts reading and enjoying literature while she is in Stamps, Shakespeare especially, along with other prominent black writers. Maya had many accomplishments in the 17 years recorded in I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings.

One of Maya Angelou's accomplishments in her 17 years in the story I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is when she secured a job as a conductorette. In chapter thirty five Maya is introduced to lesbianism, but she doesn't quite understand what is it. She becomes fearful, because she notices she has a deep voice, underdeveloped breasts and hips, and no under-arm hair. She then decides to find a boyfriend to settle the matter once and for all, but all her male acquaintances prefer light-skinned. She then causally and frankly propositions one of two brother that live near her, three weeks later she discovers that she is pregnant. "Two days after V-Day, I stood with the San Fransisco Summer School class at Mission High School and receive my diploma. That evening, in the bossom of the now-dear family home I uncoiled my fearful secret and in brave gesture left a note Daddy Clidell's bed. It read: Dear Parents, I am sorry to bring this this disgrace on the family, but I am pregnant. Marguerite" (Ch. 36, Page 282).
