Referring to the excerpt “Grandmother” by Maya Angelou found in Community a Reader for Writers, Marguerite just as Connie learns something about her own character and as Connie looks to see what is in her best interest. After her grandmother is looked down upon by a group of snobby girls, Marguerite is dumbfounded and lost as to what would the right thing to do would be, “I found that I was praying too. How long could Momma hold out? What new indignity would they think of to subject her to? Would I be able to stay out of it? What would momma really like me to do?” (8). Confused without answers Marguerite was raised to keep quiet and never ask questions. The snobby girls are allowed to do as they pleased because they were raised without manners
