III. a. Maya Angelou was an avid writer, speaker, activist and teacher. As a result of the many hardships that she suffered while growing up as a poor black woman in the south she has used her own experiences as the subject matter of her written work. In doing this she effectively shows how she was able to overcome her personal obstacles. Her autobiography “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1970) tells the story of her life and how she overcame and moved forward triumphantly in spite of her circumstances.

In this essay, Maya Angelou demonstrates how the African American community was brought together by a fight to prove to the Whites that they too had the ability to succeed. The fight was an important event for the African Americans since back then they were looked as weak and if they won this fight it would signify that regardless of their race they had power. The 1930’s had very different social ideas than we have today. In the 30’s, all American women wanted to look like the women seen in magazines and movies (Henke). They wanted to be perfect. This idea made people feel badly about themselves, and it also made people look down on others if they did not look the same as them. Maya Angelou felt that she was a double minority because she was a woman and she was black.
