III. a. Maya Angelou was an avid writer, speaker, activist and teacher. As a result of the many hardships that she suffered while growing up as a poor black woman in the south she has used her own experiences as the subject matter of her written work. In doing this she effectively shows how she was able to overcome her personal obstacles. Her autobiography “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1970) tells the story of her life and how she overcame and moved forward triumphantly in spite of her circumstances.

Angelou had numerous renowned works, however, she was extremely recognized for her self-portrayed: "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." Which served as her autobiography, I know Why The Caged Bird Sings depicted initial 17 years of her life in a very dramatic way. She wrote, if growing up is painful for the Southern Black girl,being aware of her displacement is the rust on the razor that threatens the throat (Angelou 4). In this essay, Maya Angelou demonstrates how the African American community was brought together by a fight to prove to the Whites that they too had the ability to succeed. The fight was an important event for the African Americans since back then they were looked as weak and if they won this fight it would signify that regardless of their race they had power. Maya Angelou, born Marguerite Johnson, lived through an unstable early life. She was born in St. Louis, Arkansas, but moved away to Stamps, Arkansas at age three due to her parents’ divorce. There, Angelou lived with her brother, Bailey, and her paternal grandmother (Galenet - Self and a Song of Freedom in the Southern Tradition). As discussed in her first autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, seven-year old Maya was raped by her mother’s boyfriend. The man was consequently murdered by her uncles, and Maya, feeling responsible for his death, ceased talking and remained speechless for five years.
Maya Angelou was an author, civil rights activist, and a poet. She was the first black female streetcar conductor in San Francisco, California, and was a part of the Harlem Writers Guild. Maya Angelou was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She was raised by her grandmother, who was a Christian woman strong in her faith. Despite Angelou’s upbringing, she wasn’t satisfied with blindly embracing the religion of her family. She took it upon herself to explore a wide arrange of faiths before accepting Christianity as her own. Maya Angelou’s mother abandoned her when she was a child at the young age of 3 years old and sent her to live with her grandmother.
She was a remarkable woman who over came the worst, to become a role model, as well as one of the most successful and passionate black women writers. Angelou has written many autobiographies and novels, some influenced by a tragic experience in Angelou’s life. In Angelou’s most popular and most controversial novel, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Angelou breaks silence about the harsh realties of sexual assault, loss of innocence, and changes opinions about rape victims. Angelou relates to Laurie Halse Anderson’s novel Speak through her many similarities with the main character, Melinda, and Angelou. Angelou is an inspirational figure which guides Melinda to overcome silence and speak out.

Not only did Maya Angelou stand as a spokesperson for African Americans and women, but she also stood for people who wanted to raise the living standards in the United States.

I chose Maya Angelou to do my paper on. I chose Maya Angelou because she seems like a good person to do it on because she is a really big part of the book and so there is a lot of information on here. And i also chose her because she was my age when she got this stuff done to her so i can kind of why she wanted to write a book on all of this. Maya Angelou’s background was hard for a girl that age because of all the stuff she had to deal with.

These unique experiences can embody very well for the society structure, and ideology for their belonging period of time. This makes Africa-American female writers very special, because they can use their words to express their unique experiences to give people enlightenment about equality, race issue, and hope, so on. Such as Maya Angelou, her works “is meant to say, ‘you may encounter many defeats but you must not be defeated’”
An inspirational autobiography by a woman that succeed in life and was forced to pass by many obstacles at an early age. Maya Angelou was a victim of a tough childhood being introduced to impediments such as: Prejudice and subjugation. But from these experiences she was able to change in personality and become a self-reliant woman who fights for her right in a community where people discriminate just because of skin color. Already at a young age Maya suffers from many different traumas that would haunt her for the rest of her life.
The 1930’s had very different social ideas than we have today. In the 30’s, all American women wanted to look like the women seen in magazines and movies (Henke). They wanted to be perfect. This idea made people feel badly about themselves, and it also made people look down on others if they did not look the same as them. Maya Angelou felt that she was a double minority because she was a woman and she was black.
