By analyzing the different scenarios in this novel, ones can conclude that obsession is one of the greatest obstacles for mankind to overcome. “When Dave closed the door behind him, those words span around me … ‘I wish she would die. Her face smeared with blood. You will laugh as you used to…’.”(78) Yet Maya does not seek out vengeance, but she remains caught up in her obsession. And the Delirium of death is stuck in her head. The nightmares she is having about killing “the Other” sounds as she has a prediction. Maya's obsession with Dave's wife, which causes intense headaches, “When my head hurt too much, or when I felt as if I were spending my time regretting and waiting for things to go back to the way they were, then I would think about dying.” (86). Maya relates, “My head was spinning, my hands shaking, but I could not tell what was hurting me most: not being able to see him or not being able to step into the Raj Singhs’ again.” (91). Maya was having sex with Dave’s gardener for some time, however, this encounters stopped after the gardener, Julien found out that she had lied to him. We can assume that Maya’s and Julien’s illusions have faded even though they wanted different things. Maya wants to keep visiting the Raj Singh’s house but Julien was falling in love with her.
